Ariel [Stranger #1/100}
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
― Lao Tzu
After finishing a 365 project last year, I was exploring ways to further my photography journey. Since I really liked “portraiture” but had not really focused on it, I decided to challenge myself and embark on a “portraits with strangers” project at the beginning of 2015. Although I had done a few random pictures with strangers earlier, it was never on a consistent basis. Though I started a little while back, only recently I became aware of the “100 Strangers” group on Flickr similar in intent to my goals.
This picture is #1 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

Ariel, who is from my gym, was the first “stranger” I decided to talk to for participating on my project in early January 2015. I had seen her a few times earlier though we had never talked, and was fascinated by her eyes. As a photographer, I was pretty sure that they would make a great picture. When I got over my hesitation, I approached and requested her to let me click a few pictures. I was expecting a definite ‘No’ but she was extremely kind and agreed.
Although only her eyes are visible in this particular image, I am choosing this picture of Ariel, since this is close to what I had in mind when I approached her; and in any case her eyes speak volumes. The scarf was used to try and further emphasize the blue eyes – will confess the famous “Afghan Girl” picture may be lurking somewhere in my subconscious. Besides the visibly stunning eyes, Ariel came out as an absolute natural in front of the camera – a very confident pretty young lady with a strong personality. Since then I have had the opportunity to actually shoot some more times with Ariel in the process helping me further my skills. In a way, by agreeing to be a part of the project with enough trust on a “stranger”, she is instrumental in me actually pursuing this journey.
Thank you Ariel for being a part of my project – you will always stay the “Model Number 1” of this project . I am truly happy that I asked.
