The Village of Upnor

by TAZ BRADLEY

The original Village of Upnor which the council call Upper Upnor consists of 5 streets. Upnor Castle was commissioned by Elizabeth I & the majority of the houses nearest the Castle were built from 1650s onwards. The Duke of Albemarle was apparently a resident in the main High Street for a short while although it was called Upnor Street back then & his friend Samuel Pepys also resided in the street for a while. The Castle is also famed for housing the 1st purpose built barracks in this country.
