Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean. They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered. 61535

A little hole in a piece of paper and a minimalist sketch, I took the photo this afternoon.
One world meeting another, imagination versus the blurred and strange reality.
I was sort of inspired by Plato's "Allegory of the Cave": Plato imagines a group of people who have lived chained in a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Plato, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to seeing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not constitutive of reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.
The Allegory is related to Plato's Theory of Forms, wherein Plato asserts that "Forms" (or "Ideas"), and not the material world of change known to us through sensation, possess the highest and most fundamental kind of reality. Only knowledge of the Forms constitutes real knowledge. In addition, the allegory of the cave is an attempt to explain the philosopher's place in society.

In Pencil Land
A poem by Katie Gabrielle
Just an ordinary day
In pencil land
A strange hole appears
And they blame it on the hand
"Oh it's that artist again!"
"He keeps teasing us and
Not sure which came first.
Did he draw us first, then
show us that color world?"
Are we real or is that real?
"Almost like Alice and
The looking glass, so
Why not just on through
Or go on past!"
The color world can be
Bright and true.
Better to be color
Than black and white.
Dreaming is fun for Alice
Life can be mighty boring
When you all look the same
But when you have some
Jazzy color you can
Blame the artist
So talk to the hand
In color land

Dream Days
A poem by Peter S. Quinn
Dream days here on
Filling the moment's air
Reality is now gone
Only now dreams in here
Thru every dimension
Always for more and new
Perceptive comprehension
Whatever we come to do
Dream thru the reality
Nothing is now clear
Times are currently free
There’s no place or year
Only a dream in a dream
Moving in our evolution
We only in mirror seem
Like reflecting resolution
Dreams of our own deep
Inside an abysses space
Only the instances to keep
In playful of many ways
An apparition that is laid
Like desire in some mind
And we have called it fate
That has our life assigned

The Völklingen Ironworks (German: Völklinger Hütte) is located in the German town of Völklingen, Saarland. In 1994, it was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
It is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
In 1873, Julius Buch began planning of a steel works near Völklingen on the banks of the Saar river. However, this planned work was not completed. In 1881, Carl Röchling began new construction. Two years later the first smelter began operation. The plant closed in 1986.
Today, the Völklinger Hütte is a museum. The Ferrodrom is an interactive science center focusing on the making of iron. Visitors can tour the production areas. In addition, temporary exhibits, on a variety of topics are hosted in the large power halls. In the summer, there are occasional concerts held.

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.

fr: Les reflets du Bateau de Pierre, jardin de Chine, jardin botanique, Montréal, Québec, Canada
This image is the first of a series I made a few weeks ago (yes, you're not dreaming, finally a picture taken in 2007) at the Montreal Botanical Garden. I hope you'll enjoy them. Next thursday, I will also introduce a new series of pictures of montreal skyline taken from a unique pov, so stay tuned.

Information: Set against a row of Scotch pines and larches that form a natural barrier, the Stone Boat seems almost to float on Lotus Pond. Here, once again, the materials emphasize both contrast and harmony, with the water (yin) in the pond lapping at the stone (yang) of the structure.
The Stone Boat is a much smaller version of the marble boat built at the Summer Palace in Beijing for the Empress Cixi, a powerful political figure in the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The small terrace in the "bow" is the ideal spot from which to admire the water lilies on the surface of Lotus Pond, while the upper "deck" in the "stern" is delightfully cool during the hot summer months. source: City of Montreal
