...............Streetscape makes old Urbino a fascinating town to wander through. South from P. Repubblica runs Ghinelli’s Corso Garibaldi with its rationalist arcading parallel to the sloped walls of cathedral and palace ── a powerfully slotted space, reaching to sky above. Or we may explore the medieval character of the Lavagine quarter, unpretentious, in people-friendly scale. Steplike back-streets, scarcely wider than footpaths, wend steeply up and down with artisans and centuries-old houses. Ceramic workshops reveal their craft skills; Urbino is well known for its majolica-ware. We discover secluded nooks, and snatch alley-views of palace elements. A sense of homogeneity pervades all, a continuity of humanity in time. And streets may bustle with student activity counterbalancing the refined formality of that palace........
