We took a road from Lunenburg that we hadn't been along before and ended up in Upper LaHave area. It was a lucky turn of sorts, because we stumbled across Zwicker Woodworking. There are plenty of places around selling these types of chairs, but this place was by far the holy grail. Rob and have our eye on a natural wood patio table and chairs, gorgeous. Not this year though, hopefully next year. Good prices there too.

Last of the Saltbankers: Theresa E. Connor

The 1998 season at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic marks the 60th anniversary for the launching of the schooner Theresa E. Connor. The last of the saltbank schooners to operate from the port of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Theresa E. Connor represents a way of life for generations of fishermen along the Atlantic coast.

Theresa E. Connor is the flagship of the Museum, a unique symbol of our fishing heritage. Visitors are encouraged to go aboard the schooner, walk through the areas below deck and spend time in each of the exhibit sections. Retired schooner fishermen bring the days of dory fishing to life, reminiscing about their adventures on the fishing banks of the Atlantic Ocean.

Throughout the summer, Theresa E. Connor becomes a centre of activity at the Museum, with trawl-setting demonstrations and the occasional "mug-up" for visitors, consisting of solomon gundy or cookies and tea.

Theresa E. Connor is an authentic reminder of an age of schooner fishing that lasted for almost one hundred years in Atlantic Canada. The schooner was launched in Lunenburg on December 14, 1938 at the Smith and Rhuland Shipyard, the same yard that built Bluenose. A sister ship, the schooner Lilla B. Boutilier, was launched in October of that year. Theresa E. Connor was originally owned by Maritime National Fish Company, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Captain Clarence Knickle was the first master of the schooner. In 1952, Maritime National sold the vessel to Zwicker and Company Limited, Lunenburg.

The Museum has been gathering information about the crew members of Theresa E. Connor. More than 120 men served on board the vessel, between 1938 and 1966, under the commands of Captain Knickle, Captain Jack Mills and Captain Harry Oxner. Many of the fishermen were from small communities in Atlantic Canada including Blue Rocks and Bayport in Nova Scotia and Beaumont, Poole's Cove and St. Bernard's in Newfoundland.

Theresa E. Connor continued to fish, using double dories, well into the age of modern trawlers. In May, 1963, Captain Harry Oxner prepared the schooner for one final trip to the Banks. With a few local fishermen, he set sail for Fortune Bay, Newfoundland to get the remainder of his crew. The trip was cut short when Captain Oxner was unable to get the additional crew for the salt fishing trip.

The schooner spent the rest of 1963 fishing with cod traps in the Labrador fishery. From 1963 to 1966 Theresa E. Connor fished for Zwicker and Company in a reduced capacity.

The Lunenburg Marine Museum Society purchased Theresa E. Connor and opened the vessel to the public in 1967. Mrs. Roland Hurst, daughter of Mrs. Theresa Eleanor Connor, officially opened the Museum on July 23.

As a Museum vessel, Theresa E. Connor has undergone extensive restoration work, with few physical changes to accommodate visitors. The fish hold has experienced the greatest change since the days when it was filled with the catch.

When fishing, the hold was often dark with very little light filtering down from above the deck. The hold of Theresa E. Connor was constructed to contain 425,000 pounds of fish.

The hold is now well-lit and is filled with exhibits. The displays represent both the salt and fresh fishing periods of schooners. Theresa E. Connor was involved in both types of fishing, although not at the same time. Built for fresh fish, the catch was originally packed in ice, rather than salt. In later years the salt fish trade was pursued.

Visitors will be impressed with the results of the restoration of the forecastle. In 1988 the forward section of the schooner underwent extensive repairs. The forecastle was carefully restored to its original appearance, with meticulous attention to details, including the hand-grained woodwork.

Retired crew members from Theresa E. Connor and other dory schooners are on hand, ready to sit at the galley table and add insights regarding the age of schooner fishing.

Theresa E. Connor is not alone at the Museum. The schooner is joined by the side trawler Cape Sable and smaller boats. This floating fleet of Museum vessels complements the collection of small craft in the Fisheries Museum's Hall of Inshore Fisheries. The vessels, aquarium, theatre and almost 30 exhibit galleries provide a detailed and entertaining look at many aspects of the Atlantic fisheries.

We enjoyed a visit with an old friend, Laurie Swim, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, during our June visit to this Maritime province.

In this series of photos, you see Laurie in her studio, with its view of Lunenbug harbour.... you see her with a baby quilt pinned to the wall...( Laurie had her first grandchild, a little boy, later in June)...and then in her shop...where she sells original fabric artworks, cards and prints.

Her work relies on multiple layers of fabrics, textures, beading , hand and machine stitching, all original designs. She has made large installations that appear in many places, including the Toronto subway system...and she has written several books, two of which I have owned for years. She teaches workshops....and she's always working hard...we always like to visit her and see her latest creations.

Her studio is on the street you see pictured below. ...in historic Lunenburg., Nova Scotia.... the wonderful South Shore..on the Atlantic Ocean. If you visit Lunenburg...be sure to find Laurie's studio shop.

" About the Artist

Laurie has worked as an artist for some 40 years, developing unique and innovative treatments to fashion her imagery in textiles with fabric and thread. She has written three books, two published internationally, on quilt art. The Joy of Quilting with an Introduction by Alex Colville, 1984, made her an early leader in the art quilt field. Laurie's third book, Rags to Riches: The Quilt as Art with an introduction by Mary Pratt, was published in Canada in 2007.

Laurie's works grace many private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Art Bank, Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council, the City of Toronto Art Collection and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.

Del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles, California has represented Laurie since 2007. She is also represented by Zwicker's Art Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Amicus Gallery in Chester, NS.

Laurie is recognized as one of Canada's best living artists.

Community-built Art

Laurie has combined fine art and public advocacy, initiating large scale community-made quilts with volunteers: Pulling Together, The Builders of the Rideau Canal, 1826-32, (9' x 15') 1995 is in the Workers Heritage Museum Collection in Hamilton, Ontario; Breaking Ground: The Hogg's Hollow Disaster, 1960, (7' x 20') 2000 is a permanent installation in the York Mills Subway station in Toronto, Ontario; Lost at Sea, 1961 (10'x10') 2000 at the Crescent Beach Centre in her hometown of Lockeport, Nova Scotia; The Canadian Young Workers Memorial Quilt,(9' x 18') 2003 contains 100 commemoratives of youths between the ages of 15-24 killed on the job and The Lunenburg Heritage Story Quilt (8' x 9') 2003."

On June 3 more than 1,500 people celebrated Princeton's LGBTQ community with music, games, activities, giveaways and more at this family-friendly event featuring local nonprofits and community groups.

Held in the expansive courtyard of the Princeton Shopping Center, the tunes were spun by DJ Mona of Mon Amie Events NYC with sound provided by Lake Smithfield Studio. Everyone had the chance to enjoy a bubble show by OMG Bubbles, hula hoop along with Color Me Hoopy, participate in yoga, or help paint a collaborative community mural and go home with fun giveaways .

Sen. Andrew Zwicker, Mayor Mark Freda and other local dignitaries were in attendance and local nonprofits and community groups had tables with activities and information for attendees.

Rita's Italian Ice gave out free water ice for the kids and there were free rainbow bagels thanks to The Bagel Nook and cookies to give away thanks to McCaffrey's Food Market of Princeton.

This event was coordinated by Princeton Public Library in collaboration with our community partners at McCarter Theatre Centre, HiTOPS, Princeton Civil Rights Commission, Princeton Human Services, YWCA Princeton and Princeton YMCA.

Also attending were: Arts Council of Princeton, Princeton High School GSA, Princeton Unified Middle School SAGA, I Support the Girls, Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, CASA for Children, Corner House Behavioral Health, Inspired Threads, Planned Parenthood of Northern, Central and Southern NJ, Babs Siperstein PROUD Center, Penn Medicine Princeton Health, Nassau Presbyterian Church and PFLAG Princeton.

Artist Marlon "7ovechild" Davila lead the community in creating a large mural and participants will had a chance to meet author/illustrator Rashad Malik Davis.

Torbrook is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in Annapolis County. It is located on the South Mountain of Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley to the east of the Nictaux River.

The community was settled in the early 19th century by New England Planters and United Empire Loyalists from nearby Nictaux. Residents chose the name "Torbrook" in 1856 from an old English word meaning "Where the brook comes out of the hill." Iron deposits were discovered and mined on a small scale for about 15 years in mid 1800s and then on a larger scale beginning in 1890 by the Canadian Iron Company. The area around the mines became known as Torbrook Mines. By 1910, the Canada Iron Company's No. 2 Mine at Torbrook Mines was employing 120 men to produce 11,000 tons of iron ore a year. The ore was shipped from the 3 & 1/2 mile long spur to Nictaux and then 55 miles on the Halifax and Southwestern Railway to Port Wade, Nova Scotia where a larger wharf and lading facility transfer the ore to steamships. However, the volume of ore shipments did not grow as expected and the mines closed about 1913. After the mines closed, farming and lumbering remained as the main occupation.

The population in 1956 was Torbrook - 81, Torbrook East - 64, Torbrook Mines - 125 and Torbrook West - 84.
