The classic shot of the Watchman in Zion National Park, taken from the bridge over the North Fork of the Virgin River. Even though this is the classic and 'cliche' shot of Zion, I couldn't resist. It was my first time in the park in many, many years, and shots like this are cliche for a reason - they're easy to get and they really capture what a park is like. On this particular night, the bridge was mostly lined with other photographers (as usual). The weather for most of my trip to Utah was bright, clear blue skies, so when some clouds rolled in before sunset I figured it was a good time to go get the Watchman picture. I almost missed the sunset because of watching bighorn sheep in the higher areas of the park, but fortunately made it back with just enough time to squeeze my tripod in towards the edge of the bridge. Every time a car drove over the bridge, I could see the bridge's vibration by watching the bubble level attached to my camera's hotshoe.
Zion Snow - I this is a shot of the North Fork River before it flows down to the Narrows in Zion National Park. I was surprised how quickly the snow got deep in this area. I used Gaia GPS to find to find locations with snow and the overall look I wanted then I used it's mapping layers to guide me through the area. This was very useful as the cell service was poor in the area.
About the Photo: What I liked about this view is how the stream made a reverse S-shape through the trees and snow. I tried to frame the photo so stream would guide your eyes through the photo. I also wanted to capture the small rapids, so I made sure the small tree was to the right far enough to get a good view of it. I was breathing a little hard from walking in the snow/playing with my dog, so I had to use a fast shutter. Probably over did it but it worked.
An early morning view looking upstream of the Virgin River and into Zion Canyon at Zion National Park.
Such amazing features colors and patterns in Zion National Park just begs for you to go off trail and really get into nature.
The Watchman Tower in Zion National Park rises majestically against the backdrop of the Milky Way. The rugged sandstone peak stands illuminated under the brilliant night sky, with countless stars and the glowing Milky Way arching overhead. The contrast between the towering rock formation and the vast expanse of the universe above creates a breathtaking scene, blending earthly grandeur with cosmic wonder.

Spent the morning reviewing my last visit to Zion and Bryce. Fun to revisit the great shadows and colors of Utah.
I spent a weekend hiking and taking pictures at Zion National Park in Utah. This was a 20 minute exposure at 1am. An hour after I took this pic I began climbing to the top of that mountain. 3 hours later, with my path illuminated by a nearly full moon......I arrived here (could traverse no further) I sat for a half an hour taking pics and then began climbing down. The only problem was that the moon had set and I could no longer see my path. So, I found a big flat rock and layed staring up at the stars until the sun came up. I was covered in cactus quills and freezing cold, but I wouldn't have traded that experience for anything.

The best thing about waking up early when you are on a photography trip is you are always granted with views you wouldn't see in day time, even if the morning might not look promising in the beginning.
This photo was taken in Zion National Park in a chilly morning. A huge snow storm transformed the landscape into something very different. When I woke up, the sky looked dull and cloud coverage was so high that I didn't even expect any morning light. But I still went out to the Visitor Center because beyond that road was closed, and I saw some morning fog moving between the huge rock formations with patches of snow on them. I really enjoy the atmosphere at that moment.
Long exposure of the Virgin River flowing through Zion National Park. There is a hint of sunlight and the rest was moonlight.

Zion had got to be one of the most impressive parks for hiking I've ever seen. long narrow passes, incredibly steep climbs, another spectacular view the farther you go. Worth getting in a bit better climbing-shape next time
Zion National Park from the very popular location on the Canyon Junction Bridge over the Virgin River looking south towards the The Watchman. The Watchman is a beautiful and shapely rock mountain that happens to “face” the valley from the South and it glows at sunset. DSC_7831A
Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River. The river flows to the Emerald Pools, which have waterfalls and a hanging garden. Also along the river, partly through deep chasms, is Zion Narrows wading hike.

Zion NP keeps getting busier and busier each year. But not surprisingly, the majority of the visitors all go to the same spots. If you're willing to walk a little ways off trail, you'll be rewarded to stunning vistas and you'll leave the crowds far behind. Here's a view of Zion you may have not seen before.
"Dynamic Zion"
Zion National Park, Utah, USA
Most often the Zion Narrows are captured with sunlight glowing around each corner; however during my visit overcast skies prevailed providing an opportunity to focus on even lighting with cooler tones in the canyon. And doubly nice was our timing in capturing autumn. A colleague and I dressed ourselves in dry suits, and wandered up the river. I spent hours waiting for both the crowds to disappear and the wind to provide a light breeze which made the leaves glitter in a painterly-like pose. The dynamics of the scene, from deep shadows, to cool highlights, made for perfection.
