This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. It is located in the foothills west of Mt. Hood. I am taking a hatis from my explorations of the Columbia Gorge to focus on the Mt. Hood area. I hope to do some hikng and more photography in the area very soon. I want to see how the seasons change there.

We took a little stroll up the trail to Little Zigzga Falls on Monday, and I worked on getting some pictures of the waterfalls during some fairly extreme lighting conditions. I bracketed by 6 stops, but it still wasn't enough for some of the pictures. This one looks fairly nice.

Seasons of change. Spring and Autumn are interesting for photography. I wasn't able to get out much this fall, so I don't have many pictures to show for it. I always regret missing peak foliage, but it wasn't to be this year. So, I present to you a spring picture earlier this year.

I was out at the Little Zigzag Creek in late June to see if I could do some large format pictires in some faily extreme lighting conditions. The trick was to not let the highlights burn out, and maintain detail in the shadows. I think I pulled it off. I may have to rescan it at some point to see if I can clean up the water a little.

Beautiful little creek and waterfall near Mt Hood. Nikon F5, Ilford HP5 at box speed in DDX 1:4, digitized using a cell phone and a light table.

Little Zig Zag Falls is a gorgeous waterfall in its own right. But as you move downstream, Zig Zag Creek is at least as photogenic as it curves along the lower slopes of Mt. Hood. Best of all, you get to pass by spots like this twice when you visit the falls. Once on the way in and again on the way back. It was on the way back that I decided to stop here at this 90-plus degree bend in the creek. I chose to crop this photo at the top a bit in order to exaggerate the width of the scene and stretch the stream out a bit.

Thanks for viewing!

A relaxing walk through the old growth forest in the Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon ultimately brings you to a beautiful view of Little Zig Zag Falls, just beyond the trees, where you can sit and enjoy a picnic while reflecting on your day with just the sound of rushing water for company.

There was a great sunrise this morning if you climbed high enough in elevation. I couldn't sleep so I headed up to Mt. Hood early since everyone else has been lately. The sunrise was just getting colorful by the time I headed up the turnoff to Timberline. Stopped in a Little Zig Zag Falls on the way back, so all in all it was a great morning.

Above the treeline on Hood on the Pacific Crest Trail; this snow field turns into Zig Zag Creek further down the mountain.
