Architectural gems by Zaha Hadid

Our Halls 3A and 3C opened in 2014 and 2018 and have been thrilling clients, exhibitors, and visitors ever since. The work of star architect Zaha Hadid, these halls are not just highlights of architectural design, they also serve as role models of energy efficiency. According to the experts from the DGNB, the German Sustainable Building Council, no other exhibition halls anywhere in the world offer statistics comparable to NürnbergMesse’s 3A and 3C – which is why both halls have been awarded the DGNB’s Platinum Certificate.

You all know what it is by now...

Taken some hours later and only just enough time to capture the blue hour. Why leave the car in shot I hear to ask... well for once it lends itself to scale and secondly, 20 minutes earlier the entire front was full of black limousines for an official black tie event so happy to have only the one in the final shot.

What the other photographers don't tell you... Baku is also known as the "City of Winds" and for good reason... no tall free standing tripod shots this shoot!

Inside the great building and it's just as mind blowing as the exterior. In case you're all wonder what the hell this is... it's the main staircase up to the first level, but taken from the top looking back down to the front of the building.

I've tried something different with my processing on this and added the border to avoid a harsh edge... let me know what you think.

I thought I'd spare you another exterior shot and massive write-up.

What do you mean.... where's the cheese?

Come on... it's a great title!

Beijing's second airport, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and opened in 2019. The first flight to land there was a British Airways one from London.

Baku is known nowadays for it's amazing modern architecture, and seems to be starting to head the Dubai route. There are some striking examples, and several more in the construction phase (the Flame towers, and Crescent Moon building). This complex was designed by Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012. It houses a library, a conference hall and a museum. It is dedicated to former president Heydar Aliyev who ruled the country in the early nineties in their fresh years of independence. Heydar Alijev is quite the national hero because every city we visited seemed to have at least 3 things named after him; a park, a street and a museum.

The flowing shape is the building is supposedly inspired by his signature but locals also say it was inspired by the up-blowing skirt of Marilyn Monroe in her most famous picture pose..

One of the venues of the World Cup Football 2022 designed

by the late Zaha Hadid.

First of a series of 29 fine art photos on modern

architecture in Qatar commissioned by Qatar Tourism, that I

took early this year, mostly in Qatar’s capital city Doha. All

29 photos have been photographed and processed in

roughly 3.5 months only using the B&W Artisan Pro panel

to speed up the process and increase accuracy. I’m

presenting this series as they are being exhibited right now

in the M7 museum in Doha, Qatar. I was there at the

opening last week, and while I was there, I've added even

more photos to this B&W series of fine-art architecture in

Qatar. What you will see as the series of

29 unfolds in the next days and weeks, is that there’s a

strong connection between the architect’s design and its

environmental and cultural context. Not just tall modern

skyscrapers but architecture that fits the physical and

cultural environment. I’ve tried to celebrate the architect’s

design through my interpretation of it in relation to its

environment. The tonal composition has been carefully

designed to give visual weight to the architectural

structures and pronounce their forms, while the material

composition (object and space selection and

arrangements) enhances the visual energy of the

structures as they are juxtaposed to the serenity of the

(back)grounds. A serenity that is inspired by the

characteristics of a desert area.

If you happen to be in the area: the exhibition at the M7

museum on the 2nd floor, in Doha runs till January 2023

Having followed the construction of the Zaha Hadid designed Investcorp Building since it's initial announcement I know there was quite a bit of debate over the cladding for the building. A range of materials were considered including Corten (rusty) steel and a dull grey colour but I think the highly polished stainless steel chosen was by far the best option.

From the Zaha Hadid website : "The new Investcorp Building for the Middle East Centre provides 1,127 square metres of additional floor space and a new 117-seat lecture theatre; doubling the space available for the Middle East Centre’s expanding library & archive, and providing optimum conditions to conserve and manage the centre’s collections that were previously stored in the basement of 66 Woodstock Road."

A view of the folded glass facade of the new extension of the Port House in Antwerp. The faceted triangles reflect the cobblestones below, making the architecture appear almost surreal. What initially looks like digital art is in fact built reality – graphic, playful, modern.

As much as I enjoy the sculptural qualities of this Zaha Hadid designed Investcorp Building at St Antonys College, Oxford I can't help but notice a few practical issues with the design, such as how the blinds are closed on this large south-facing glazed wall........
