Korela Fortress
Round Gate Tower
The surviving low (8 meters) round gate tower (Lars Torstensson or Pugachevskaya Tower) was located opposite the bridge connecting the Old Fortress with Spassky Island. The tower has two tiers, with fire ovens that were later laid. The walls of the tower are very thick (4 meters on the lower tier), which indicates that by the time of construction, fire fortification was already quite developed. Such towers were built in the Swedish Kingdom by Saxon masters from the early 1540s.

Darktable is used . More to suit me taste than to fix shortcomings of the lens. It is quite possible that out of camera JPEG is more pleasing.
Many years ago I decided to stop being an art director in advertising and become a full-time nature photographer. I didn’t really have a portfolio that was strong enough, so I then spent almost a year shooting non-stop all over Africa to get a bigger, better, and more focused portfolio.
Already in that first year, I was contacted by Nat Geo who wanted to publish one of the images I shot during that long term project: a picture of an ox cart, dwarfed by giant baobab trees on Madagascar. I totally loved those trees, and when you love something it often results in good work. I always wanted to go back there but just never got around to do so. Until last year.
When I got a call from Nikon Japan asking whether I would like to go on an assignment with a few prototypes of the first Nikon mirrorless cameras to a location of my choosing, I picked Madagascar. The primary reason for doing that had nothing to do with these trees, but I knew I wanted to make them a part of the project.
It’s really interesting to return to a place many years after your first visit. On my first visit I was totally inexperienced and didn’t have much of a vision nor a plan. On my return to Madagascar early last year, it was quite the opposite. I had thought about every single shot I wanted to get, when to get it, where to get it, and how to get it. Instead of just wandering around, looking for something pretty, I arrived with a solid plan and a very detailed shooting schedule. This is the way I like to work.
The image above is the result of pre-visualizing, my most important creative tool. Knowing what was already out there, I tried to create something different. Not by using Photoshop trickery or Instagram filters, but by getting it right on location.
This was shot on an early morning long before sunrise. There was a ton of humidity in the air, and I knew that using backlight would create some interesting light beams. I used our car to create the backlight and included myself in the frame to add a sense of scale.
