My first sighting of a Cheetah in nearly 3 years. I was the second or third person to enter the Reserve at Phalaborwa this morning and the first one at this particular spot where I came across a mother and her two youngsters. The early bird catches the worm, they say.

Young badger at The Pixies.

As I was watching new father, the great spotted woodpecker, feeding his first born, this little guy snuffled along the burn (stream) and began helping himself to the scattered peanuts. I can only assume the noise of the water disguised my footsteps, as I was about a foot away from him, just after this was taken. Eyesight is not great, and the breeze must have been behind him, I suppose. Consequently, I spent about ten minutes in his immediate vicinity, watching and photographing him. It was lovely! I feel so blessed and lucky to have these guys nearby.

Two new Sand Hill Cranes

From Cornell Ornithology Lab:

... some start breeding at two years of age, (some) may reach the age of seven before breeding. They mate for life—which can mean two decades or more—and stay with their mates year-round. Juveniles stick close by their parents for 9 or 10 months after hatching.

The earliest Sandhill Crane fossil, estimated to be 2.5 million years old, was unearthed in the Macasphalt Shell Pit in Florida.

Sandhill Crane chicks can leave the nest within 8 hours of hatching, and are even capable of swimming.

A few weeks ago, I lingered too long in one spot for the comfort of a song sparrow with lots of bugs in its beak. Stopped by the same place a few days ago, and saw this young song sparrow, even making short flights between the branches! They grow so fast!!!

Spotted (no pun intended) this young American robin in one of the cherry trees, enjoying a sweet meal.

I spotted this juvenile dark-eyed/Oregon junco working the trees in search of a snack. Great to see these youngsters getting bigger!

only one was curious enough to pick its head up from grazing...

This youngster was being fed by a song sparrow...quite a sight to see:). Below is a short description from Cornell labs explaining it:

" Females forgo building nests and instead put all their energy into producing eggs, sometimes more than three dozen a summer. These they lay in the nests of other birds, abandoning their young to foster parents, usually at the expense of at least some of the host’s own chicks." (Cornell)

A pair of goslings was accompanying their parents in Tom McCall Waterfront Park while I was on my walk. I think they're so cute at this age!

Along with our 4 adult buddies we now have 3 youngsters. They aren't ready to make friends with me yet and I can't tell if they are male or female. Gosh, they are so sweet!

Wanting to bring awareness of the beauty of these magnificent birds, who are still under threat because of our lack of care and stewardship or our environment.

With heartfelt thanks for your kind visit. Have a wonderful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty around you, enjoy the process of creating, and stay safe! ❤️❤️❤️

An American Coot (Fulica americana) young perches on a floating cattail stalk in a wetland to the west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

There is something about a young coot's colours that sets it apart from other young waterbirds.

If you look closely on the end of the upper bill near the black tip, you will see a tiny white bump. This is called the egg tooth which it uses to scar the inside of the egg in a circular pattern which enables it to crack the egg open to hatch.

A juvenile bald eagle at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge.

Living in Florida I don't have any shots of fall colors to take, so had to dig in the archives from when I was on a deployment. I did manage to find a few that I like. Will try and catch up with everyone tonight.

Shot taken at North Lake in GG Park. When the raccoons are in this part of the park, you have to wait for spot lighting to get any kind of shot. Its covered with trees and is mostly in the shade. Sun filtering through occasionally. It sure is fun to watch them though! There is at least 10 new ones added to the clan this year.. They are now about 4-5 months old and are adorable little bandits!

Just wanted to pop in and say Hi to everyone,

Hope everyone is doing well and wishing you all a wonderful week! :-)
