Rudy de Reyna, 1957.

Isn't this the most menacing street gang you've ever seen?

A collection of stories from a cast of hard-boiled writers on juvenile delinquency including Evan Hunter, Richard Prather, Hal Ellson, Gil Brewer, Johnathan Craig, Frank Kane, and Robert Turner.

I've got the paperback bug lately and had considered tracking down a higher grade copy, but this beat down edition seems aesthetically pleasing and perfectly appropriate to this old punk.

It felt like we were in a David Lynch movie, or something. If Dennis Hopper had walked up, I would’ve been like, “Hey Dennis, nice to see you. Can I get a picture of you with Liberace?”

My husband had to go pick up some materials way out east in an area called Rialto. It’s near Rancho Cucamonga. And it’s an arm pit. When we were driving back, we drove past this huge church that looked sort of like a warehouse that’s been all blinged out. It was all painted gold, and had some sort of shiny gold awnings, and big sections of windows that were tinted a reflective gold. It was bizarre.

So of course I had to pull over and take a picture of Flat Liberace with the blingy gold church.

Anyway, there were a handful of cars in the parking lot, and we parked kind of far away from the building to get a lot of it in the picture. Some guy came out of the church and waved to us like we were someone he was expecting. I half-waved back, with Liberace in one hand, and my camera in the other. Then I put Liberace down on the pavement, snapped a picture (with that guy standing at the door to the church expectantly), and we turned to leave.

Walking toward us were two young punk guys, probably teenagers. One had a mohawk and the other an afro that he had a sort of hair band holding back off his forehead. They had on tight jeans, metal belts, very emo/punk-looking. And not at all what you’d expect two teenage black guys to look like. Especially in a place like Rialto.

They really just came out of nowhere, in the middle of this huge empty parking lot, walking right towards us. They said something to Daniel about catching a bus or a train or something and having been to a party the night before and they were just trying to get home. They called him “sir.” He said nope and got in the car. Then I heard, “something something, ma’am?” (My hearing wasn’t working too well.) I said, “What do you need? Some change?” and I reached into the car for my little change holder and gave them about a dollar in quarters (all that I had).

So we start driving out of the parking lot, and a woman pulls into the parking lot on a bicycle. The street she’d been riding on was at least a four lane street, maybe even a six lane street. (She was on the sidewalk.) Behind her was a toddler, about three years old, on foot. I thought, “That’s weird.” And then behind the toddler came another one, who looked like she was about four years old, pushing a stroller with a one year old in it. They all were running after their mom, who by this time was clear across the parking lot on her bike.

I said to Daniel, “This place is weird. Let's out of here.” And we did.

May 2, 122/365 (1949/2192)- Jerry DeLoach, affectionately known as "Pops" by our students for many years, passed awayWednesday. He was originally a custodian at another school across town. Sometime very late in his career he was injured on the job so they sent him to our school for a "light duty" assignment. He mostly sat in a chair in the back hall to keep an eye on things, we jokingly referred to his as the Sheriff of the back hall. Sneaking sodas past him was the ultimate thrill to many students, he was really well loved.

I remember once a young student gave him a hard time about something, some seniors found out and located the young punk. They "gently explained" that he would never disrespect Pops again and live to tell about it. Pops had the respect of every student that really knew him.

This lonely chair in the back hall is my little memorial the man known as Pops. RIP Jerry!

This one's for X-Ray Delta One. A line of Australian wines by "Some Young Punks". Other varieties include "Cycle Buff Beauty" with an interesting label as well.

In 1997-ish there was a promotion where you could send away for Max mugs. I owned two. They are long gone and my taste in coffee has changed too, but coffee is still my number one morning priority. Although I don't drink Maxwell House coffee anymore, that jingle in the link is the one I drink to.

According to my internet search, the S.S. Beaver was a steamboat owned by the Hudson's Bay Company and used to service trading posts. This mug, however, made me smirk when I saw it. Aren't there like, marketing people employed by such companies who, say, nix certain designs because immature people like me will only see it in terms of the slang? It's like all those Canadians who go down under wearing their Roots sweatshirts and having the Aussies snigger behind their back.

Beaver.

HBC should really hire some young punk who's hip to these things...

100 Words #3 Addictive

The Hereios visit the group 100 Words.

My birthday is towards the end of the September, so I always try to exploit it for maximum shopping happiness.

I made a Sephora online purchase and also an in-store purchase, to get my birthday gift. I bought MUFE HD Foundation 140 (you may have noticed that this is not the same color that I bought months ago -- 127 was a tad too light), MUFE Pure Pigment #18, Philosophy Senorita Margarita shower gel, and some assorted samples. And also the free birthday glosses from Sephora, obviously.

At Bath and Body Works, I fell in love with the Leaves scent, so I bought a large candle. Since they were running the 2 for $20 deal (one regularly costs $19.50), I picked out a Japanese Cherry Blossom candle. And as usual, I had a free item coupon, and I traded that in for a Blushing Cherry Blossom body spray (or whatever they call these things these days).

At MAC, I thought I would be going crazy for Style Black, but it was much more underwhelming in person. I bought the Black Greasepaint stick, Volcanic Ash Exfoliator, Seriously Hip nail lacquer (see next photo), Faultlessly F/W lipstick, and Red Full-Stop lipstick. I traded in my B2M empties and got Young Punk MES and Blackfire Glimmerglass for free. :)

My drugstore/Ulta finds included some Fantasy Makers glitters (great for incorporating into polish!), and 2 NYX lipsticks (Narcissus and Chaos), plus some dinky manicure thing to push me to $10 so I could actually use the coupon.

At Lush, I couldn't resist the smell of Noubar soap, so I got a small slice. And fresh masks were now $5.95, so I had to get a Cupcake! I was at the counter and they were adding me to a VIP log for future store events, and they mentioned that they would do something special for people on their birthdays -- so I used that to my advantage, and told them that it was creeping up soon. The wonderful SA gave me a Karma bubble bar, and Karma makes me so very happy. :)

My review on the Hot Rod alt mode? Love. Love love love! He's a flamin' red wedgie of love. Chrome side pipes, huge spoiler, and pure win.

The 2014 painting was created by Natalia Rak. It shows a young punk at a tent, recalling a distinctive scene of Jarocin festivals. A Jolly Roger and a jar refer to Dżem band, a frequent guest of the festival.

I've been wanting to see it for a while now. See, Forbidden Broadway made fun of it in their most recent title (rude awakening) and sang about it in such a way that was more loving parody than complaining about Jukebox Musicals, so how could I resist?

Actualy, it's more a matter of how could Mrs. Wirehead resist... And then I get to come along... She's the broadway fan, I'm the loving husband who comes along and doesn't mind the Broadway.

The lovefest is this weekend. We drove through it, and I'm betting reesie is in fishnet heaven. :D

So how was it?

Um... whoa.

Last weekend, we saw a recording of the stage version of Rent. Which was really much better than the movie... largely because there are plot points in the movie that don't make sense unless you have seen the musical, so in many ways, it's actually *less* accessible than going to the live show. I suspect that if they'd just released a good recording of the stage version, they'd probably have made just as much money but spent far less.

Um, but if you consider that Rent opened in early 1996 (With the creator, Johnathan Larson dying of Marfan's right before the premiere) and the big musicals since then... you see a lot of Disney and a lot of Jukebox Musicals.

Jukebox Musicals and Disney are not always a bad thing. You can't sneer at things for being pulp because the genre needs pulpy crowd pleasers just as much as it needs fine musical theater. So, watching Rent, I was again reminded that there was no follow-up to Rent. I mean, there's some questions about Rent that will probably never be answered (like exactly how much of a role Lynn Thomson and Sarah Schulman played) so it's not like you can say "Oh, if Johnathan had seen a doctor who knew WTF Marfan Syndrome is, Broadway would be different".... but it's also not the case that some young punk with both rock sensibilities and the understanding of the rules of musical theater didn't get inspired by Rent and found new and interesting ways to break rules and stuff.

Wicked and Avenue Q were the highlights between Rent and now for me. Wicked is very much in the traditionalist genre of musical theater, but is very well done. And Avenue Q is just... well... Avenue Q.

Which brings us to Spring Awakening.

There's seating on the stage. Like Equis. Also on-stage nudity (although Mrs. Wirehead and I were both expecting it to be *cough* a little more extreme for the amount of fuss made about it) like Equis.

So, during "All That's Known" I'm kinda wondering WTF is up with the kids pulling modern microphones out of their late-nineteenth-century German schoolboy outfits. By the time "The Bitch of Living" rolls around, things start to make sense.

The part I really have to give Ducan Sheik credit for is the instrumentation. The players are pretty much guitars, keyboards, drums, and a string quartet. And when you are playing these heavy parts, sometimes you see the guitarist with an electric, but it's just as likely that he'll be playing on an acoustic.

Oh, and some of the actors play the piano. And they really do play it, too.

The lighting was incredible. They made heavy use of both fluorescent lights (both in tubes and CF form) and cold cathode neon lighting, going between tons of color and realistic lighting, depending on if the kids had the microphones out.

The part that was really cool is that it's a demonstration of "plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose". The play the musical is based upon (which has all but one of the controversial bits) was written in the late nineteenth century... but when you get down to it, the emotions the characters were feeling are the same thing kids sing alt rock songs about today. Hence the insertion of alt rock songs in a period piece.

The morality is interesting. They decided to write it in such a way that it's both pro-choice and pro-life at the same time. Teenagers have sex, and it's not the act of having sex that causes problems but the aftermath... and it's written in such a way that's quite a critique of "Abstinence-only" sex education.

The set was minimal. Almost, dare I say it, rent-esque. The band sits in the corner of the stage, chairs are used repeatedly, and the fourth wall is breached.

The funny part about live theater is that it's interactive. So the brief nudity shown was much more jarring than modern R-rated flicks.

Um. I really want to see what happens when it plays the midwest. They aren't really hitting Cincinnati, and I kinda wish they were. Because I wana see how the censors-for-community-values handle it. :)

... it's the weekend and, ...

A few minutes after I arrived and started taking pictures of my food (eliciting strange looks from most of the other patrons) a large group of young punk-rock dressed kids came in (they were all carrying instruments of some sort, so I am going to presume they were part of a band) Anyway, one of their number came back to the table with a small suitcase, and I first thought was some part of their band paraphenalia, but it turns out, it was a 'crave crate'. A cardboard suitcase with 30 little burgers in it.

They were very nice and they let me take pics of them and only looked at me a little funny.

Apparently you can get 'crave crates' of various sizes, up to 100. (note, 100 white castle burgers (in a nice take home 'crate') will run you about $50)

My Conclusion: after all of this, White Castle is one of the paramounts of Americana. They get points for their level of quality, excess, and food quantity per dollar spent. And if you really like fast food, you will probably really love White Castle. (case in point: my roommate, after viewing these photos really wants to go to White Castle and try it out now)

To all the non-americans reading this: look, but don't eat.

I took this one mainly because of the grafitti in the top right. You young punks need to learn about punctuation. It should read, "Support yer local music, assholes!" As it's written now, you're just calling the musicians assholes. Kids today!

Absolutely pristine Chevelle SS one of the cleanest cars I've ever seen, looks like it was straight off the showroom floor. Sitting there next to Harford Rd.

Not 1 minute before I took this picture some young punk tried to rob me of my camera... in broad daylight right across from a busy safeway. Some say words are stronger than fists, I say Nikon F5's are stronger than fists. I live in a good neighborhood but its always good to remember... its still Baltimore.

We at Creative Tempest discovered Mear One as young punks, who were first realizing that we wanted to make art for a living. He was a major influence on us then and continues to inspire us now. We thought it was only fitting that our first major influence would also be our first post on this blog where we aim to post the web’s most inspiring artists that we love.
