This is an illustration for the Fieperdepiep magazine. They were kind enough to let me draw whatever I wanted,
and as I had been wanting to do something with Japanese folk monsters that was very welcome indeed.
Imagine my surprise when during making this picture I found out that in Japanese folklore there actually is a midsummer night's demon party!
It's called the Hyakki Yako, and it fills me with no uncertain amount of pleasure to have made a picture that therefore fits in an old tradition.

Kuchisake-onna (口裂け女, "Slit-Mouthed Woman") is a malevolent figure in Japanese urban legends and folklore. Described as the malicious spirit, or onryō, of a woman, she partially covers her face with a mask or other item and carries some sort of sharp object. She has been described as a contemporary yōkai.
According to popular legend, she asks potential victims if they think she is beautiful. If they respond with "no", she will kill them with her long scissors. If they say "yes", she will reveal that the corners of her mouth are slit from ear to ear, and she will then repeat her question. If the individual responds with "no", she will kill them with her weapon, and if they say "yes", she will cut the corners of their mouth in such a way that resembles her own disfigurement. Methods that can be used to survive an encounter with Kuchisake-onna include answering her question by describing her appearance as "average", or by distracting her with money or hard candies.

One thing that I think Second Life is severely in short stock of is "wet" clothes. I love the way that cloth looks when soaked all the way through (in a PG way!), so seeing that Kottr made a shirt in the "wet" style made me so very, very happy! i know everyone is excited for the crystal heart (opening on June 30), me included. soapberry has created a fantastic gacha for the event consisting of fantasy skins for genus/omega (plus human rares) and a rare aqua-glass leg, complete with fish and kelp. best of all, the skins are made for freya, hourglass (plus male and female versions of hg petite), v-tech, maitreya, and simplestuff. i'm wearing the boy version of hg petite in the 'secret rare' shade^^ it's obvious that tons of love went to the creation of these gaia skins, so i hope you will check them out!
