There are four essentials paths of Yoga postulated by Swami Sivananda. Each is suited to a different temperaments or approaches to life. All the paths lead ultimately to the same destination - to union with God.
1. Iyana Yoga – path of self-analysis
Jnana Yoga is the path of knowledge, wisdom, introspection and contemplation. It involves deep exploration of the nature and our being by systematically exploring and setting aside false identities.
2. Raja Yoga – the path of self-control
Raja Yoga is a comprehensive method that emphasizes meditation, while encompassing the whole of Yoga. Yoga deals with the encountering and transcending thoughts of the mind directly. Raja Yoga is also called Ashtanga Yoga. It referring eight limbs leading to absolute mental control. Raja is divided in three further classifications:
a. Hatha Yoga- Most Western style Yoga are based on Hatha Yoga. It is about the physical and mental aspect of Asanas, breathing and cleansing.
b.Kundalini Yoga- Kundalini Yoga focuses on Prana, our life force.
c.Laya Yoga- Laya Yoga focuses on meditation.
3. Bhakti Yoga – the path of self-surrender
Bhakti Yoga is the path of devotion, emotion, love, compassion and service to God and others.
4. Karma yoga – the path of doing something for others and yourself
