Célèbre lieu de pèlerinage, la ville est réputé pour son grand Temple d’Annamalaiyar du 9ème siècle, dédié à Shiva, sa légendaire colline sacrée d’Arunachala qui est un lieu saint, et aussi par la présence de l’ashram de Sri Ramana Maharshi, considéré comme l’un des plus grands sages et mystiques de l’Inde du XXe siècle.
Le temple, l’un des plus grand de Inde a une superficie de 10 hectares, est entouré d’un mur d’enceinte, orné de quatre tours monumentales servant d’entrée au sanctuaire (appelé Gopuram) magnifiquement décoré avec des milliers de sculptures peintes riches en couleurs. Son architecture est caractéristique de l’époque Chola au IXème siècle.
