My first spiritual teacher preached the importance of paying attention to the journey, not the destination. Once I fully practiced being in the moment that same teacher said find a direction and go there, for there is no journey without a destination.

 

Many people feel that this idea of having a peak pose in yoga is bad because it promotes egoism. The posture isn’t the problem, nor is the persist of accessing it. It’s the mindset and belief that something should happen upon attainment of it, and further more the belief that “attainment” is a solid unchanging experience. Attainment is more like a step to an endless staircase - nothing happens when you step up except for a little more experience and strength...which is a good thing.

In 1985ish, I resided in Berlin, Germany. At that time, I could be found nightly sitting in "The Jungle," "The Risiko," "Tom's Bar," "The Orangien Bar," Dominica Bar," "Cafe M," "Kreuzberg" or on the set of "Der Himmel Uber Berlin." I was a bartender. I was a socialite. I was having a fabulous time - yet, I was a drunk.

   

After three years of living in Kreuzberg (by the Berlin Wall), I returned to "The City by The Bay" - San Francisco. Upon my arrival to San Francisco, I realized that I had no game plan, no money, and not a friend in site ...... HOWEVER, I don’t suggest doing yoga to achieve shapes, it will be rather unfulfilling and or disappointing. Instead the Asana practice can be about developing a relationship with your physical body - Awareness.

 

So this side crow I am suggesting you go beyond. The pulling of the knees inward activates your hip flexors, including your deep core “The Psoas”. But it doesn’t stop there - push the ground away until your shoulder blades widen - especially the weight baring arm.
