We adopted the Yaz from Animal Angels, a no kill shelter. He had been in the shelter for almost two full years- one of many, many unwanted dogs of mixed pit bull heritage that are hard to place because of homely looks and scary reputation. At the time we were not planning on having children, but we had three cats and a busy schedule. His gentle nature was apparent from the first day he came home, and in spite of that "old dogs" adage he learned basic commands easily and in spite of his gentle nature his fierce protectiveness of his family meant I was never scared when Tim was away. And let’s not forget he is named for baseball great Carl Yastrzemski, and within a year of his arrival in our house the Red Sox finally won the World Series. Coincidence? I think not.
Before Josie was born our vet warned us that the Yaz may have issues with being displaced as the "baby", but he has never been anything but gentle and patient with Josie. Josie spends at least an hour of every day piling objects on his head, giving him too exuberant hugs of screaming "Go-gee!" in his face. He is her best friend.
Every year I send a Christmas donation to the lovely people who cared for the Yaz those years before we brought him home. He has two large scars on his side, and is missing a piece of his left ear. I spend a lot of time imagining his life before the shelter, and what series of events brought him to our house. I know how lucky we are to have him, and how lucky Josie will be to grow up with such a good pet.
There are so many good causes that need donations. (I joke that next time we adopt an animal it will be from fascists or Republicans- or some group that I won’t feel emotionally obligated to give money to for the rest of my life.) But, in the meantime the following is my list of worthy causes that can use the extra few bucks that you may have just laying around after the holiday madness.
1. Send Emily to DC- My gorgeous niece.
2. Animal Angels- Former home to the Yaz.
3. Cat Sense- We volunteered as a foster home for these lovely and hardworking ladies before Josie was born, and have never met anyone more dedicated to a cause.
4. Dear Zachary- A documentary about the tragic murder of a good friend, and the subsequent miscarriage of justice that led to the murder of his young son
Happy Holidays everyone!
While shooting a for Tsetso Originals on sunday, i got to steal a shot of this wonderful young lady, who was kinda enough to not only assist me ( i lost my scheduled assistant due a scheduling conflict ) but she also let me take a shot of her. Yaz, i hope you enjoy this shot and THANKS FOR YOUR HELP you made my day oodles better!
August 1,1968 Fenway Park , Boston . The Red Sox lost 1-0 to the Yankmee's, but there was one 10 year old in the crowd who had a great night anyways.
The history behind the photos. One evening earlier in the year , we (Mom,Dad & Me), were driving home from my Grandmother's house after the 4 of us had gone to a Red Sox game ( My reward for straight A's on a report card ). My Dad spotted a car on the side of Rt.93 with a flat tire and a gentleman obviously struggling with it , so He stopped to help. After the tire was changed and all was well , the gentleman came over to the passenger side of our car , where my Mother and I were waiting, to thank us. He saw the red Sox pennant I was waving and asked when I was next going to a game , when I told him , he asked who my favorite player was and I said Yaz & Hawk. He then explained that he was the Governor's Personal Photographer and asked if I'd like to get my picture taken with them , needless to say I said yes and these pictures are the result.
This was the last gasp year for the team that had won all of our hearts in 1967. Lonborg was gone with broken leg and was never the same. Tony C. was tragically recovering , and never did. George Scott was developing an attitude , I think Sparky Lyle may already have gone to the Yankmee's, Dick Williams who was such a fresh voice in 1967 wore out his welcome.
But I will always remember October of 1967 , sitting in Mr. Kipnes' science class , where you could see the wire from a transistor radio earphone on every boy in the class and hear the occasional cheer or moan as something happened in OUR 1st World Series.
