Shab-e Yaldā ("Yalda night") is an Iranian festival celebrated on the "longest and darkest night of the year,"that is, in the night of the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice. Calendarically, this corresponds to the night of December 20/21 (±1) in the Gregorian calendar, and to the night between the last day of the ninth month and the first day of the tenth month of the Iranian civil calendar. The longest and darkest night of the year is a time when friends and family gather together to eat, drink and read poetry (especially Hafez) until well after midnight. Fruits and nuts are eaten and pomegranates and watermelons are particularly significant. The red color in these fruits symbolizes the crimson hues of dawn and glow of life. The poems of Divan-e-Hafez, which can be found in the bookcases of most Iranians families, are intermingled with peoples' life and are read or recited during various occasions like this festival and at Nowruz.

My hope is intense
As intense as the throbbing vein in between my brows
It comes and goes
But when here, mistake you make no more
It stings and burns
As the emptiness that roams eleven rooms of the house
A cannon ball of fire I usually enter
Speed of light mostly feathered
I feel the farthest winds coming from the bottoms of the sea
No resistance towards my ignorance
No revolt against revelations
I connect deep in layers of insomniac dreams
I bend logic and mock your foul tastes
Yet my hope is the poem you choose for your mother's grave
The rose he put in my hair
Yalda arriving nonplussed
Soon after long hard hours in bed
It is the word of Albert Camus
Like a moment for madness of sincerity
My hope is the tear she shed when he grazed in between her breasts and confessed
Love was a myth, someone said today, a faraway lie
Then they detach the seeds of joy of their sons
Collect them in hard lonely balls and rush
To a hundred and so friends and colleagues and such

The morning sun graces three frequently photographed buttes of Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii
(Valley of Rocks/ Monument Valley). Although clear skies had been forecast for this morning we were fortunate to have some scattered clouds to provide some color and texture to the sunrise sky. As always there was a crowd gathered at “Forrest Gump Hill” (now on Google maps). It amazes me no one has been hit there, but of course you can see cars coming from a long way away.

Once again the time of various mid-winter festivals pervade the place.
During the reign of Henry VIII, Father Christmas was pictured as a large man in green or scarlet robes lined with fur. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, bringing peace, joy, good food and wine and revelry. As England no longer kept the feast day of Saint Nicholas on 6 December, the Father Christmas celebration was moved to 25 December to coincide with Christmas Day.

« Iran: year 38 » ( 38 years of Iranian photographs)
It is not a coincidence that Iran has so many photographers. When today’s Iranians want to express themselves, they use the tools given to them by history. The modern version of poetry is photography, of course. Images, photojournalism, documentary or art are visual poetry, if you will. With this exhibition, we want to introduce those who are shaping the image of Iran today. A very diverse mix of photographers, artists and filmmakers portraying a country still caught up in revolution and war, but also fast-changing beyond recognition. Iran is both a young and an old country at the same time. Thousands of years of history have come before the 1979 Islamic revolution. We start counting again from that year.
Iran: year 38, is to be an exhibition celebrating the culture of visual poetry embraced by Iranians.

A gorgeous New Mexico sunset graces the sky above a flooded field of indifferent Sandhill cranes, heads in the water, ignoring the blissfull scene. The San Mateo Mountains provide the blue horizon.
Thanks to moment's notice for willingly giving up the 80-400 lens at a critical time, as the 150-600 was not designed for sunset photography.

Happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Yalda, Kwanzaa, Yule and everything else people celebrate this time of year. Remember to go out in the woods a lot during this coming year. It won't solve your problems but it's a good way to run away from them.
