Yes, that IS a Yak. We turned around and went back to check, because I thought I was seeing things. I wasn't. In the middle of Wyoming,,,a yak. Amazing!
Adult osprey stands attentively over the three juveniles, as bald eagles are always present in the area! At Jackson Bottom wetlands a few weeks ago.
I don't know what she was squawking about, but she was sure letting everybody at the park at Elkhorn Slough know about it. Just north of Monterey, California.
The Yak is a long-haired domesticated bovid found throughout the Himalaya region of southern Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia. Yaks are heavily built animals with a bulky frame, sturdy legs, and rounded cloven hooves, and extremely dense, long fur that hangs down lower than the belly. While wild yaks are generally dark, blackish to brown, in colouration, domestic yaks can be quite variable in colour, often having patches of rusty brown and cream. They have small ears and a wide forehead, with smooth horns that are generally dark in colour.

The YAKS at Hellabrunn Zoo are domestic yaks (Bos grunniens). The domesticated species are mainly found in the Himalayas, Mongolia and southern Siberia. They evolved from the wild yak (Bos mutus) that lives in the Tibetan highlands. Yaks are able to thrive in the extreme climatic conditions that exist in these high altitude regions and are frugal eaters. In their often inhospitable habitats, they can survive without food or water for several days at a time. Domestic yaks play an important role in these regions, especially in agriculture. The animals supply milk and meat as well as wool and leather – and their dried manure is used as an important source of fuel. Yaks are also kept as pack animals.

Aerobatic Stunt Planes, Yak-18T and Yak-55
Head-On Takeoff Criss-Cross-Snapski manuever
The 18T was designed in the late 60's, as a civilian aircraft. The aircraft has a nosewheel, is a four- or five-seater, and has a nine-cylinder 360 hp radial. The Yak-18T shares systems with the Yak-50/52 family. These aircraft all have the 265 kW (355 hp) Vedneyev M14 nine-cylinder radial engine as well as the same underlying compressed-air system for engine starting, brakes, undercarriage and flaps. The propeller, avionics and other parts are also shared. The Yak-18T, like all Russian aircraft used for training, is aerobatic. (Wikipedia)
The Yakovlev Yak-55, was a single-engined all-metal cantilever monoplane. The aircraft's wing is mounted midway up the fuselage and is of thick, symmetrical section to aid inverted flight. The pilot sits in an enclosed cockpit under a sliding teardrop canopy level with the trailing edge of the wing and with the seat below wing level. The powerplant is the same tractor configuration 360 horsepower (270 kW) Vedeneyev M14P engine driving a two-bladed V-530TA-D35 propeller, as used by the Yak-50, while the aircraft has a fixed undercarriage with titanium sprung main gear and tailwheel.
The prototype Yak-55 first flew in May 1981. (Wikipedia)
On the market of Zhongdian, the so-called "Shangri-La", in the furthermost northwest of the Chinese province Yunnan, not far from the border to the Tibet Autonomous Region. The city and the county are part of the Himalayan foothills and are located at an elevation of almost 3,200 m (10,500 ft). Only Yaks are well adapted to such high altitudes, therefore you'll find neither cattle nor beef in this region.

El yak vive salvaje o domesticado en las altiplanicies esteparias y frios desiertos del Tibet, Nepal Pamir y Karakorum, entre 4 y 6000 m de altitud. Mide hasta 2 metros y pesa unos 1000 kg.
This little guy is about a day old. No ear tags yet....I'm so glad. The tags look so big in their little ears. He was quite curious to see me....his mom not so much! :-) It is the season for babies....hopefully I will get out and about and capture more. They are so darn cute!
Happy Sunday!

Yak taking a rest. Adapted to high altitude with larger lungs and hearts than normal cattle, they continue to produce foetal haemoglobin their whole life to increase oxygen carrying capacity. Conversely at low altitudes or above 15 degrees C (59 F) they begin to suffer from heat exhaustion due to a thick layer of subcutaneous fat combined with a lack of functioning sweat glands.
