Got me feelin' kinda shocked right now

Couldn't stop right now

Even if I wanted, gotta get it, get it, get it, when it's hot right now

First light with the Samyang 135mm f/2!

XSS J16271-2423, better known as Rho Ophiuchi, lies at a distance of about 400 light-years from us. It is a binary star system and the closest stellar nursery to Earth. It surrounds the huge orange star Antares.

I’ve been wanting to capture Rho Ophiuchi from up close since imaging this object with the 50mm lens. The smallest telescope we have, the Meade 70mm APO, would be great if using our full-frame camera, but it would be a tiny bit too tight! Because of that, I recently bought a 135mm f/2 lens, just so I could get a closer view of Rho Ophiuchi.

I have to say, I was blown away by how crisp the stars were all over the field of view even with the aperture wide open, wow! The image below was taken at f/2!

I am happy with the results, although I wish I used an autoguider because the stars do look a tiny bit elongated when zoomed in.

You can learn more about the capture here, see it in higher resolution, more tips, and attempts with different lenses: www.galactic-hunter.com/post/rho-ophiuchi

Here are a few of the shots that I took to finish off the film that ended the previous day's trip to Lincolnshire ....

I don't know what made Selwyn Jones decide that buying MCW Metro HiLiners would be a good idea, but he did just that in August 1993, taking four from Northern Bus at Anston. Two originated with East Midland, and the other two were from Grampian, where they ran alongside 7 similar vehicles with Northern Scottish.

From memory, they all retained Northern Bus livery throughout their time here, which was generally a little over two years. I guess Selwyn thought they would be suited to National Express jobs like this, and given the number of MCW vehicles that were operated by NBC companies all over the country, there would be no shortage of engineering assistance or spare parts if (when) one of them broke down in some remote corner of the land !

Experimental second-generation light GPMG. Chambered in 7.62x51 NATO, this South African machine gun prototype was

commissioned in the late Cold War era. It was decently successful and troops issued seemed to have no quarrels with the piece. Now outdated, the weapon is owned by a few collectors, African pirates, and other insurgencies.

Heavily inspired by the SS-77, with a bit of M60 and FAL mixed in.

For the contest. Thanks to Ahura Ironworks for general help in finding a suitable inspiration and some advice / opinions.

Probably the smartest livery carried by this batch of buses.

Grampian's first batch of Olympians followed on from Leyland Atlanteans, the first of which arrived in 1967, the last being delivered in 1983. 345 (XSS 345Y) was numerically the last one.

The Olympians commenced a new fleet number series at 101 (to 110), which was rather more logical than the use of 100 for the first of twelve Daimler Fleetline, that started the previous new fleet number series for double deckers in 1966.

The 1984 Olympians were 101 - 110 (A101 FSA - A110 FSA) which were new in January and February 1984.

Not shown in this rear view was the single piece layout of the destination screens, a feature retrospectively fitted to many Atlanteans.

Two batches of Alexander AL bodied buses were delivered to Aberdeen Corporation Transport in 1973 - twelve Daimler Fleetline CRL6-30 and twenty four Leyland AN68/1R. The Fleetlines entered service in March 1973, with the Atlanteans hitting the road in November and December 1973 and January 1974. These were that last new double deck buses bought by ACT. 162 (NRG 162M) was one of the batch 154 - 177 (NRG 154M - NRG 177M). In 1977 it was painted in an all over silver livery (sponsored by Bell's scotch whisky) to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

The first Atlantean / Alexander AL withdrawal was 166 which suffered fire damage in April 1978.

154 was withdrawn in 1983 passing to the service fleet as a driver tuition vehicle by October that year. Following transfer to Grampian Regional Transport Ltd in October 1986 it continued to be used for driver training until withdrawal in January 1989, when it was repainted in 1986 Grampian Transport livery moved (engineless) to the Grampian Transport Museum. In recent years it has moved to the adjacent Bus Collection at Alford where it is being re-equipped with and engine (thought to be from former 344 (XSS 344Y) and running gear.

155 - 165/167 - 170 passed to Scottish Bus Group companies in 1984, 171 was dismantled for spares by December 1986, while 172 - 177 were disposed of in 1987.

ACT became Grampian Regional Transport in May 1975 and the new undertaking would take delivery of a further one hundred and five Atlanteans with virtually identical Alexander AL bodies. These were 178 – 197 (KSA 178P etc) in 1976, 198 – 217 (ORS 198R etc) in 1977, 218 – 237 (XSA 218S etc, YSO 228T etc) in 1978, 238 – 257 (DSA 238T etc) in 1979, 261 – 300 (HRS 261V etc, HSO 281V etc, LRS 291W etc) in 1980, 301 – 315 (NRS 301W etc) in 1981, 316 – 330 (URS 316X etc) in 1982 and finally 333 – 345 (XSS 333Y etc) in 1983. Fleet numbers 258 – 260 were not used.

The XJS was re-engineered and relaunched in 1991, when Jaguar were under the ownership of Ford, the name now becoming XJS rather than XJ-S. All XJS's from this time were referred to as facelift models, the rear buttress was retained but side windows appeared larger. The car was also given the new 4.0ltr AJ6 engine and in 1992 a Convertible was added to the range. The 5.3 V12 was increased to 6.0ltr in 1993

In April 1994, substantial revisions were made to the 4.0-litre AJ6 engine and it was given a new name of AJ16, now equipped with coil-on-plug ignition. In 1995, the final specification changes were made and the car was referred to as the Celebration model to celebrate the 60th year of Jaguar Cars.

The XJS was discontinued in 1996, after 21 years in production, superseded by the XK8.

There were plenty of SBG Y-types around, but my favourite was this Strathtay one, which brought back memories of holidays based in Perth in the 80s and 90s. This had been Alexander Northern's final one of this combination, but it passed to Strathtay on that fleet's initiation in June 1985.

Angus Transport Group's late built Leyland Leopard / Alexander 'Y Type' XSS 43Y was caught here by the camera on Sunday 7th July 2019. The bus was operating the 'Basin Rambler' free service linking various tourist attractions in the Montrose area. When photographed it had just completed the turn round in front of the National Trust for Scotland's 'House of Dun' and was heading back to the Caledonian Railway's Bridge of Dun station and preservation base. The livery carried was that of Strathtay.

Mercedes SK Loader Truck, D900 XSS, Trade Plated ex P. Ewing Civil Engineering Co. Ltd, Blair Lodge.

XSS 43Y is a very late Leyland Leopard PSU3G/4R with Alexander Y-type bodywork. New in 1982 as Alexander Northern NPE43, it passed to Strathtay (no. SL43) in 1985 and is currently preserved as such.

XSS 43Y has the honour of being the last Alexander Y-type Leyland Leopard delivered to the Scottish Bus Group.

It entered service in December 1982 as Alexander (Northern), NPE43.

Based on a PSU3G/4R chassis it carries a 53-seat body. It transferred to Strathtay Scottish as SL43 in June 1985.

Now preserved, it is seen visiting the GVVT weekend event at Bridgeton, Glasgow in October 2016.

A long distance cascade from Aberdeen to Devon, with Red Bus names, but still in not-very-red Grampian livery. That being said, she still looks in quite good nick for an 18-year-old bus. Looking at the current location on Google maps and the bus station site sadly appears to have been sacrificed for extra car parking.
