When I woke up after my nightshift my wife asked me:
“Do you like the 3 Blind Mice Trail Network 😏?”.
Suspiciously I inquired why she would be asking!?
“I was thinking of taking the kids to the Penticton Beach and perhaps there might be a shelf I’m picking up that I would need your help with”
Aha.
So I texted my friend @aa_ron_whalen to ask for directions to get to the massive slap he has shown us on a group ride last year. So with treasure map in hand I went out for the hunt. Sadly after walking up and down the marked spot for 30min and not being able to find it I was about to give up and head back down when a couple locals pulled up. I asked them if they know of such a slab and they told me they just rode it and it’s a few hundred meters up the trail. I followed their instructions and spend another 30min looking but then ran out of time and had to go pickup the fam from the beach. Later on after reviewing it with Aaron we realized that I missed it by just a few more hundred meters . Oh well, next time.

Gillard evening laps with my social distancing buddy @eddieamstaffy . It’s funny how you get all hyped up on MTB videos all winter long and the further away from your last ride the bigger the jumps you did in your head become. Then you form all these super unrealistic goals for your next riding season until you stand on top of a jump and calculate all the rehab work/time a crash would take. Fuck, getting old sucks. Fun was still being had, even at a seniors pace, although no air miles were collected. I need to learn how to fly.

My youngest really wanted to go bike riding around the neighbourhood last night, but between my wife prepping her bread for bread day and me having to leave for nightshift neither one of us could hack it. So I promised her a nice long bike ride the next morning along the Myra Trestles with a breakfast picnic . What the girls didn’t know was that we were going to have zero degrees °C, snow covered trails and that Dad was going to turn it into a home schooling lesson. Measuring distances, converting units and problem solving questions like: “The total distance of our bike ride this morning was 3.93km. Measure the total distance in meters of each of the following: trestles, tunnels and on gravel riding. Refer to your notes”.

Drove up to visit my buddy @darcywardo and we went to check out Sun Peaks Bike Park. First time riding this park for the both of us. Unfortunately the park didn’t inform anyone that a lot of the trails were still closed due to very wet conditions and even the trails that were open had some serious mud problems. I think they might have opened the bike park a bit prematurely. At one point my front tire literally got sucked into a mud hole and it threw me over the handlebars. I landed on my hands which sunk wrist deep into the mud and I managed to stop my face from getting a mud mask just as the visor on my helmet sunk into the mud 😅.
I really suck at flow trail jumps, gap jumps or anything that has that zero gravity moment ( I long so badly to be good at them though ), after trying a few tech trails and them being literally just suspension destroyers, we stuck to the flow trails. As a result by the 5th run I was starting to really get my confidence up and clearing some of those tables. I hope I’ll get to look back at this video in a year or two and be super proud as to how far I have come. Still had a good time and got to do what I love. Gonna have to head out to SilverStar real soon and work on getting rid of my dead sailor move once and for all.

After our failed attempt at Jumbo Pass due to a mud/snow slide, we still wanted to squeeze out the most out of our day. Big shoutout to my wonderful wife @laura.j66 who not only just got deeply disappointed by her hike not working out but then promptly shuttled me up to a nearby FSR which in addition to she had to reverse out of for almost a km 👏.
Sadly the FSR was locked with a yellow gate and I had to pedal all the way up the horrendous 6km with grades of 30% most of the way. Not sure I would do it again. The trail was an awesome old school rock and root gnar. Super technical & high consequences if you mess up. It was worth the climb to tick this one off my list but I think Newtsac has definitely more value for your buck, not to mention shuttleable.

Yesterday we landed in Christina Lake for the second leg of our little getaway and after setting up and taking the girls to the beach they surprised me with some Sunset Father’s Day Shuttles. The Stewart Creek Trails was gonna be my first stop, because I really wanted to hit “There’s Willis”. We had perfect weather all day with not a dark cloud in sight and then during the 15min drive to the trailhead, an angry rain cloud materialized out of nowhere from behind the mountain. It rained for literally 15min and solely over the specific trails I wanted to ride and then it was gone. I had my fingers crossed that the features somehow would be spared but unfortunately this trail went from mind blowing skinnies, teeter totters, wooden berms and jumps to a death trap. That wasn’t going to hold me back from trying all of them. At first it went well but then the trail gods had enough and shit on my parade with a nice body slam on the last massive roller coaster feature. Today I’m a bit bruised up on my left hip and chest but nothing that’ll stop me from having fun. Hopefully the features will dry out in time for my comeback.

I was deciding between heading back down to Penticton to find that slab on 3 Blind Mice or doing the Little White slabs. But the prospect of having to ride in 37°C degrees wasn’t very appealing. That’s when wifey chimed in and suggested I should ride Revelstoke because it’s only 30°C degrees there. I was all ears when she proposed that she had some mushroom leads and wanted to follow up on them. Well how could I say no to that, so in the name of mushrooms we packed up and drove down to Revelstoke 😁. For “mushroom picking” of course.
UFC & Ultimate Frisbee are the perfect combo to start or finish any Boulder Mountain excursion! UFC is a fast and flowy trail with a couple of punchy kickers, perfect warm up or cool down. I took Eddie with me in this first leg of the trip just to run him out and make sure he’s tired, after this he got to continue with the girls mushroom picking.

This trail was a sweet accident. Once I finished Andreas’ I still wanted to hit something before rejoining the fam in town so I thought Moby Dick would fit the bill perfectly. Too bad I didn’t have more time because it was a super fun trail I would have loved to try again after getting a feel for it. Next time.

Went out to Gillard to continue on a skinny that I started I few weeks back. I was clearing trails when I saw this fallen tree perfectly situated along side a trail bend which would have made an awesome 200m alternative and would join back into the trail. Was gonna make a skinny, to a seesaw to a skinny feature. Sadly someone wasn’t too happy with the idea because when I got there my work was all cut up. I had my bike with me too so instead I went to see if my balls have had any growth and sure enough I managed to check off two new big ( to me ) features ( the slow-mo parts of the video ). Only problem with checking off scary features is that it moves features that were on the “impossible” ; “not in my lifetime” or “you’re too old for this shit” list to the “possible” ; “you got this” list 🙈.

Boys invited me for some #socialdistancing shuttle laps. Everyone drove up with their own vehicle and we kept 6 feet apart during shuttling, 2 guys in the cabin as far apart as possible and two guys in the tailgate and obviously we held our breath the entire way up. $2 HotDog was running smoothly from top to bottom. The name of the game was keep your ass behind your bike and hold on the entire way down 😁.

I brought my bike along for the horseback riding so right after we were done, the girls shuttled me up for round two at Stewart Creek. I wanted to see what “Boris” & “Wheelchair” was all about. You can see Boris in the video and sadly it hasn’t seeing a lot of traffic, very overgrown in areas and a couple of trees down along the way. After I was done I opted to just go back and get my revenge on “There’s Willies” & “Spooner” instead of “Wheelchair”. But the girls were hot and starving so we changed plans and I was gonna go for a sunset ride later on. Unfortunately a thunderstorm materialized out of thin air later on and I wasn’t gonna make the same mistake twice. So that was it for Christina Lake riding.

Third time is a charm. First time I rode Oblivion, it was pouring rain and my camera froze up, second time it destroyed my derailleur and ripped through my back wheel costing me $600.- in total repairs. Today it was perfect 🙏.
Good company with my buddy @awger , mans best friend running alongside and the cherry on top was hitting that golden hour just as we start descending. Just as the name indicates already, Oblivion is in the middle of nowhere, a trail that should not be and yet there it is, a perfect balance between speed, tech & gnar. It’s a pain in the ass to shuttle to but a must ride at least once a year 👌.

After a small adventure mishap and having ventured too high up a mountain only to still find at least one to three feet of snow at 1700m elevation we decided to come up with a plan b. We meaning Me & my boy Eddie. Plan B was Kalamalka Lake and we decided on Fraidy Cat & 36DD. I believe fraidy cat must be one of the steepest trails in the Okanagan if not the steepest one. So much fun. Also finally found the rock roll on 36DD, the approach was awkward but I finally ticked it off.

Last but not least was Baden Powell, not so much a trail but more the main artery to get you back to the climb. All the upper trails would spit you out here and you can either climb back up or then continue to the lower parts of some trails. This was a multi use trail so you had to take it easy and look out for hikers and dog walkers but honesty one of the most beautifully architected trails on the mountain in my opinion. The stone and wood work infused with its natural environment is just mind blowing. It’s as if nature made it that way. I lost count after the 4 lap but I think I managed to climb the mountain 6 to 7 times in under 24hrs. It was amazing to ride the rainforest and I can’t wait to come back!! Also misaligned the 360 action cam and now you can see how dorky I look to make this cinematic magic happen. But it’s totally worth it, love the unicorn perspective.

Summer time is finally here and we took the kids on their first day trip. We packed up the bikes and drove up to Oyama and rode the rail trail along the Kalamalka Lake. I got to test my knee and I had no limitations. There was no elevation so I couldn’t see how my calf would do. So I guess I’m ready to ride again as long as I don’t crash 🤔😂.

No new injuries surfaced from yesterday’s crash, hip and pec are still a bit bruised but I was good to go for some more Christina Lake goodness. My girls were kind enough to give me another shuttle up to the Dave Swetland Memorial Trail. This is what Trailforks says about the trail: “This trail was built as a tribute to Dave "Sweaty" Swetland a pioneer of freeride mountain biking who grew up on his family's land nearby.
Sweaty inspired the first generation of Christina Lake locals to pursue the more fringe aspects of mountain biking. These riders were then instrumental in the development of Wheelchair Access and Boris. You can see Sweaty's antics in the first three Kranked films and also the recently released "Moment" documentary.
It was a beautiful mellow black line with amazing views and some cool skinnies. Sadly, the 360 berm was a bit damaged ¾ of the way down.

After wrestling all day with bouncy castles, Eddie & I drove up to Smith Creek for a quick loop of all my favourites. I believe it’s been 2 years since I’ve last been up at Smith Creek. So much has changed, lots of wooden features disappeared but were replaced with dirt and some other features got a refresh. Also houses are being build all along the dirt road soon to be suburb road.

Last goodie from our stay at Nelson. After I did Morning Sickness I wanted to explore something new and Doz Slabs fit the bill. There was no way of really accessing it unless you are coming down from Hitman so I kinda had to hike a bike it from the Redfish Campground.
Doz Slabs looked like a really cool fun trail in its prime, sadly most of the wooden features were taken down but there were still lots of rock slabs around and one skinny. The last rock slab took some time to commit to but I did it. Not only did you have to lean over the drop so you avoid the tree, you also had to bunny hop over a small crack in the slab before sliding the main slab down. Didn’t soil my pants either.

Now that “UFC” got you all loosened up, “Ultimate Frisbee” is literally just throwing you down the side of Frisbee Mountain. At times it was more controlled falling then riding 😁. Once the mountain spits you out at the bottom, you are now ready for what Boulder Mountain has in store for you. I took Eddie with me for this short section wanting to tire him out so he could then putter around with the girls while they picked mushroom but even these 4km were too much for him and he wasn’t looking too good. I made him go swim in a creek at the bottom that was freezing cold and that helped a lot but we made him take it easy for the rest of the day and kept him in the A/C truck as much as possible. By the time we arrived home he was good again but no more bike rides until the temps go down.

Pinch me, I must be dreaming. No more are these trails just videos I drool over from my desert like hometown. No flow here as far as the eye can reach. Just lots of yank, skinnies and mind blowing trails and features. So much love and work put into these trails, like there was actual literal masonry work installed. .
@laura.j66 surprised me with a 3 day getaway to the Northshore, our Airbnb is at the foot of Mount Fromme . Started with the first classic called “Oilcan”, these trails date back to the mid 90s .

For round ✌we rode Baconator and the 1/4 was still very wet with some running water down the trails and pooling. Boys dug some drainage trenches to help those areas dry out quicker. But the rest was in prime condition and hella fun. Nobel Canyon never disappoints.

After our beautiful family hike I was racing to get back in time to beat the storm that never really materialized. The weather forecast looked nasty right up until our departure, so I was worried I wouldn’t get in another ride in Nelson.
The beauty about the Kokanee Creek Campground is that it’s right across the best trails Nelson has to offer ( in my humble opinion ). Newtsac is always a good time, steep, loose, and lots and lots of rock slabs. There is this one massive jump/drop that I still need to tick off but for that I first need grow my second ball back. Its the kind of trail that if you only would have time to ride one trail this would be the one. Highly highly recommended.

Whenever I ride flow I’m always tempted to just skip editing it and toss the footage. Ain’t nobody got time to see a bunch of lame jumps and casings. But then I think to myself that A.) I would probably love to see where I started out in a couple of years if/when I’ll be collecting air miles B.) this shit makes me happy and if someone doesn’t like it they can always unfollow.
So after an insane lap chasing Will, Vince made it too and the three of us shredded some flow and repeated some of the tech trails for shits and giggles.

We went back to Gillard to retrieve @awger ‘s truck and decided to do another lap. Kept on driving up, settled @eddieamstaffy in for a nap and then rode a chill night lap down Moose Knuckle.

Ladies Only. This was the trail that I was really after. I’ve seen videos of it so many times and couldn’t wait to get after it. Unfortunately on the first evening it got dark quickly and I basically was riding it in complete darkness. The next day I had to go and repeat the trail to appreciate it’s full beauty! This videos has scenes of both rides, and I think most are of the same location 😅.

The last time I rode Valemount was the year I bought my first mountain bike, the Norco Sight. Back then I didn’t venture much into black trails and stuck mostly to the blue. So it was interesting to return and see what trails and features I could check off this time. First things first, always pay tribute to the old school trails. So when I read the description of “Andreas’ Downhill” I knew that’s the one. Hand-build, steep, rooty and loam as far as the eye could reach.

I really wanted to get a full day of SilverStar Bike Park in this summer and I managed to squeeze it in on the last day of the season. Unfortunately it was the long weekend so it was quite busy and line ups took up to 30min at times but I think I got 7 laps in. All the skinnies first .

6 Stitches, @spaceethics has never ridden it and it’s been on his “to ride” list forever. It was my second time riding it. @spaceethics went first and just destroyed the trail riding it from top to bottom blind. Barely could keep up with him. He wanted a second lap but I had my heart set on finding that stupid slab that’s been haunting me at 3 Blind Mice. Let’s just say I should have listened to @spaceethics and taken a second 6 stitches lap. Got lost, didn’t find the slab and got a flat without a replacement tube at the top of drop a lot .

It was slippery and wet but what a beautiful trail they build. Rode the brand new trails Mantle & Granite at the Predator Ridge Resort. It really had a coast feel too it but maybe that’s just because it’s still spring in the Okanagan. Lots of granite slaps, hence the name. A bit short, but if you connect the ride with Ellison or do two loops you’ll get a good ride out of it.

Well I’ll be damned, the Okanagan has a proper skinny after all. Lap 2 was at Kerplop and will definitely require another visit in drier conditions. To hit the bigger wooden jumps but also the smaller rock rolls, kickers and drops. Tons of fun and potential here. Only thing is there was somewhere a fence jump that I somehow seemed to have missed or they have taken down🤔.

Wobbly Pops is always a good time. I’m surprised that it was downgraded to a blue line. But I’m seeing a lot of activity on trailforks and a lot of the dotted lines where old retired trails were indicated have disappeared 😢.

Next up was Pipeline, I came to check out the awesome wood feature ( apparently one of the largest wood feature on the shore ♂️ ) but sadly it was closed. On the bright side it’s being rebuilt to its former glory. Trail was still fun to ride and this is where I landed my first flat, thankfully on the last 100m.

Buddy told me that someone had put in a lot of work clearing First Notch. I’ve either never ridden it or only once early on when I first discovered Gillard in my early days of mtbing ( 5ish years ago ). I was able to squeeze out 2 laps of Gillard between clients and so on my first lap I went to explore First Notch. Running beautifully from top to bottom, now only hoping that they’ll rebuild all the amazing looking wooden structures along the way.

So stoked that I got my bike back up and running in less then 24hrs. Went for a quick rip before my work set starts tonight. Casino Royal is always a guaranteed good time, all the gap jumps are sadly still out of reach for me. Need to get back to SilverStar and practice my tabletops.

Starting from the very top, this was another solid option at the #valemountbikepark . The Craig going into Stinger and then finishing into Tinfoil Hat just like the High Roller & Turducken duo. You could say one is more the flow trail way with dirt jumps coming down where as this one was more the tech descent. Beautiful stonework too.

Tinfoil Hat DH was my introduction to Valemount 4 years ago when we first visited. I could swear it was a black trail back then, either way always a guaranteed good time with some black optional jumps.
