Ever since I was a small boy I've loved Cosmos flowers. Their whites and especially the wonderful shades of red from the pinkest of pink to scarlets and almost purples, mostly with bright orange or yellow hearts. And the sharp long seeds which are so easily planted fascinated me; I'd dig them up at various stages to look at what would become those delicate, strandy seedlings soon to grow out to majestic plants.

Never had I see yellow Cosmos until this morning. They're a new cultivar developed in 2014 by horticulturalists Van Hemert & Co. of Hazerswoude-Dorp in the Dutch province of South Holland. In 2015 their new Xanthos was awarded a prize for innovation by Plantarium at The Green Retail Fair.

Patara is an ancient city, in the past the capital of the Lycian Union and the only gateway of the Xanthos Valley to the sea, where you need to go for archaeological sites and one of the best beaches in Turkey.

The blue-winged parrotlet (Forpus xanthopterygius) is a small parrot found in much of South America. It includes the turquoise-rumped parrotlet (Forpus xanthopterygius spengeli), which sometimes is treated as a separate species. The blue-winged parrotlet is mainly found in lowlands, but locally up to 1200m in south-eastern Brazil. It occurs in woodland, scrub, savanna, and pastures. Flocks are usually around 20 birds but can grow to over 50 around fruiting trees or seeding grasses. It is generally common and widespread, though more localized in the Amazon Basin.

Ancient Lycian site of Xanthos/Roman amphitheater...

Myra was a leading city of the Lycian Union and surpassed Xanthos in early Byzantine times to become the capital city of Lycia. Its remains are situated about 1.5 km north of today's Demre,

The date of Myra's foundation is unknown. There is no literary mention of it before the 1st century BC, when it is said to be one of the six leading cities of the Lycian Union It is believed to date back much further however, as an outer defensive wall has been dated to the 5th century BC.

Rock-Cut Tombs

These are the most numerous of all types of Lycian tombs and some are perhaps the most visually striking - elaborate funeral chambers carved directly into the rock face, usually into a cliff. Most often, the tombs are carved like the facade of timber Lycian houses with protruding beams (house-type tombs), usually with one or two stories, sometimes three. It is believed that the first house-type rock-cut tombs were carved in the 5th century BC.

In Greece vacation we had a turtle safari trip around the island Xanthos.

It became so amasing when this huge turtle came up to the surface for to snap the air and disapear to the deep again for another 30 minutes or so..

They was unpleasent to see so many "landcrabs" waiting with cameras..

While out taking pictures of Daffodils the other day I came across a strange species of flower. I can only guess that these are Yellow Polyester or as the title states Polyesteri flavum. Alternatly they may be Xanthós polusesterós. I'll let that up to the botanists here on Flickr to sort out. The petals span about 58mm. HMM! Thank you all for any views, faves and comments.

Three Nereids

From the Nereid Monument, Xanthos, about 390-380 BC

Sculpture 912, 910, 909

The three figures are sea nymphs, daughters of the sea god Nereus, riding over the waves on Sea creatures. They are thought to have escorted the soul of the deceased on its journey to the afterlife. A sea bird is visible under the feet of the nymph to the far right and partially preserved dolphins support the others. Their dramatic, wind-blown drapery is clinging and almost transparent, wet With sea spray. They were originally placed between the columns of the tomb.

Our Lycian Way adventure, in the middle of September 2020, we set off from Ovacık with our team of 9 people. Our goal was to reach Çitdibi in 25 days. On the first day of course we thought we would go well as we did in the beginning. In our second hour, our friend stopped walking while climbing Baba Mountain, Kozağaç, Kirme, Butterfly valley and we ended the day in Kabak with 8 friends and slept on beach in the evening. Our plan was to go to Cennet beach in the early hours of the 2nd day and spend the day there. After a hard walk (our 25 kg backpack) we arrived at Cennet Bay. (here our two friends stopped walking) We spent swimming and relaxing on Paradise beach. In the early hours of the 3rd day, we arrived at Yediburunlar village after the Ottoman cistern as a result of Korsan Bay and the steep and difficult path, and we watched the sunset at the Earth Wake Up Hotel and spent the night resting in our tents.

On the 4th day, in the early hours of the morning, we completed the day in Bel, Belceğiz, Gavurağılı, Pyndai ancient city ruins and then Patara Gelemiş. On the 5th day, we visited the ancient cities of Patara, Latton and Xanthos and spent the sunset watching the dunes. On the 6th day, Patara Perforated arch Kalkan (Two friends left Kalkan, we stayed with four friends) and we ended the day in Bezirgan granaries. In the early hours of the 7th day, we arrived at Gökçeeren village after a difficult journey in Bezirgan, Sarıbelen, and then we finished the night in our tents in the garden of the soup kitchen to rest. We completed the 8th day in the village of Çukurbağ after the challenging mountain climbing and footpath from Gökçeeren and the day after the ancient city of Phellos, we reached Kaş at noon on the 9th day, where our friends left and I had to leave. (In the meantime, we walked 168 km.) In May 2021, I will be on the Lycian roads again to complete the rest.

Letoon was a sanctuary precinct and not actually a city, and seems to have had no major settlement associated with it at any period. It was administered by Xanthos and was the spiritual heart of Lycia, its federal sanctuary and the place of national festivals. Letoon was the center of pagan cults activity until perhaps the 5th century AD when Lycia was ravaged by Arab attacks and the area started to silt up with sand brought by the Xanthos River. It is believed to have been abandonded by the 7th century AD.

Xanthos, the ruins of which is situated nearby the modern town of Kinik and Esen cay (ancient Xanthos river) in Turkey, was the capital city of ancient Lycia.

We first encounter Xanthos in the Hittite and Luwi sources named as Arinna. Xanthos played a very important role in terms of culture and commerce not only for the Lycians but also for the Persians, Greeks and Romans.

The theater of Xanthos dates from the Roman period, around 2C AD, and only a part of the stage building and a substantial amount of the seats remain. It was built in such a perfect plan that it did not obscure the Harpy Tomb. The deep orchestra pit of Xanthos theatre is a typical example of a structure for gladiator fights in the late Roman era.

Coypel had an excellent knowledge of ancient literature and here he precisely illustrated a passage from Homer's Iliad: Poseidon and Athena, having assumed human form, support the hero Achilles as he rushes at the Trojans. In the foreground are the river god Scamander (Xanthos) and his brother Simoeis, also sworn enemies of Achilles, while in the sky Hephaestus, carrying torches, is rushing to his aid, sent by the goddess Hera.

The ABC

Now the rain falls so impetuously, riches aplenty

it keeps us inside, releasing emotions sentimentally blocked

within each breath exhaled by the life-giving cognoscenti

for the inhalation of heartfelt wishes where the Soul is docked

annul the repudiated negativity, that divided entity

forever changing the gears of a-la-mode finicality

a centre-stage for the emotive high speed chasing grandevity

where nothing much has changed to alter one's hypersensitivity

why do we continually see the rebirth of reflected deathly imagination?

and a ghostly glow of adolescent reasoning and jiggery

overturning wisdom's long standing reverence as king-of-the-nation

creating this nom de plume society of ravishing a hidden lottery

it's easy to fall to one side without grasping the deeper mystique

coming undone in the maize of secret truths and nameless nicknames

one step can be a blot upon our landscaped garden growing oblique

unless we clean our feet and wipe the slate clean from para-claims

for the energy we reserve should not necessarily wait in queue

as our resource is identifiably within reach of each respiration

listen to yourself alone from the crowded nanny state keen to subdue

that driving inner passion resplendent in it's desirable temptation

it's not going to go away, never can it be suppressed by uniformity

nor ridiculed by anything with the assurance of veridicality

get the life and see the light of illuminating your vision's own worshipability

embrace the warmth and energy bestowed by the xantho-vitality

no answer is found without thumbing through the pages of you

no time no chance no single glance, but the essence of escaping the human zoo.

The Ancient City of Myra was once the capital city of the Lycian people, it lies 1.5 kilometres inland from the modern farming town of Demre. The city sits at the base of a sheer cliff face, outstandingly ornate tombs have been built into the rock and high above, on the clifftop is a ruined Byzantine castle, a Turkish flag flies above the ruins. The impressive site boasts thick defensive walls as well as a largely restored amphitheatre and the Lion's tomb, or Painted tomb, with 11 life-sized figures depicted on the inside walls. Large rocks with extensive carvings of animals and grotesque faces lay scattered about the site.

Myra was once a much larger site containing the grandiose temple of the Goddess of Artemis Eleuthera but it was destroyed in the 4th century AD, during the time of St Nicholas who endeavoured to remove all trace of paganism from the land. The Church of St Nicholas is located in Demre, it was once served as a resting place to the saint and now hosts a small museum.

Although there are no historical record of Myra before the 1st century BC, the grand city is thought to be among the 6 major cities of the Lycian Union, the other 5 are all located in southwest Turkey, between the modern city of Antalya and the quirky port town of Fethiye. Xanthos, Patara, Tlos, Pinara and Olympos can be visited from either of these locations and some are connected by Turkey's first long-distance hiking trail, the Lycian Way.

The archeological excavations and surface investigations at Xanthos have yielded inscriptions in both the Lycian language and Greek, including bilingual texts that are useful in the understanding of Lycian.[22] The Xanthian Obelisk, otherwise known as the Inscribed Pillar, is a trilingual stele which was found in the city; it records an older Anatolian language conventionally known as the Milyan. Wikipedia

Xanthos was the name of a city in ancient Lycia, the site of present-day Kınık, Antalya Province, Turkey, and of the river on which the city is situated. The ruins of Xanthus are on the south slopes of a hill, the ancient acropolis, located on the northern outskirts of the modern city, on the left bank of the Xanthus, which flows beneath the hill.

Myra was one of the six most important cities of ancient Lycia (Xanthos, Patara, Olympos, Pinara, Tlos, and Myra) and by the 4th century, Myra was important enough to have its own bishops, among whom Saint Nicholas (aka Santa Claus), born in nearby Patara, was the most famous. At the time St. Nicholas was bishop, Myra was also made the capital of the Roman province of Lycia. Subsequent rulers treated Myra well and the city continued to prosper, but in the 7th century decline set in as a result of Arab raids and the silting of the harbor. As a results of further misfortunes caused by more assaults of the Arabs, earthquakes that hit the region, and the flooding of the Myrros stream, the city was largely abandoned.

The ruins of the ancient city of Myra consist of an impressive necropolis and adjacent Roman theatre and are located at about 1.5 km north of present day Demre - Kale. The well preserved Roman theatre of Myra is large with 35 consecutive rows of seats. The facade of the amphitheatre was richly decorated with theatrical masks and mythological scenes. To the west of the theatre the steep cliff is honeycombed with closely packed rock-cut tombs, most of them of the Lycian house-type.

The ancient city of Sura, whose ruins are located 5 km beyond Demre, was important for its fish-oracle of Apollo. There are only a few remains left, the most prominent being a monumental Lycian pilar-tomb dating from the 4th century BC. The tomb was intended for family burial, the owner was placed in the pillar tomb and his family in the chamber underneath.

Andriake, the port of Myra, was founded as a sister-town at about the same time as Myra. It is located in Çayağzı, at about 5 km of the city centre of Demre at the mouth of the Androkos river. Andriace was one of the most important ports of Lycia and it was the port where Saint Paul and his companions Luke and Aristarchos changed ships on their way to Rome. The most important ruin in Andriace is the Granarium or Granary of Hadrian. This impressive and well preserved 65x32 meter building was erected during the reign of Emperor Hadrianus (117-138).

Though there is a conflict of opinions as to when Myra was first occupied, and as there is no mention of it before the 1st century B.C. it is generally agreed that Myra came into prominence in the 5th century B.C. In the 1st century B.C. Myra that comes from the word "Myrrh" was a commanding city of the Lycian Union and was chosen over Xanthos by Constantine in early Byzantine times as the capital of Lycia. Myra also used to be an important port during the Roman times.

One of the most famous bishops of Myra is St. Nicholas, who lived in the early years of the 4th century A.D. He was a great philanthropist and has gone down the annals of history as Santa Claus. After his death, Myra was converted to a rich pilgrimage center and many churches were built.

The Nereid Monument

Das Nereidenmonument von Xanthos ist ein gegen Ende des 5. Jahrhunderts v.

The Nereid Monument is a sculptured tomb from Xanthos in classical period Lycia, close to present-day Fethiye in Mugla Province, Turkey. It took the form of a Greek temple on top of a base decorated with sculpted friezes, and is thought to have been built in the early fourth century BC as a tomb for Arbinas, the Xanthian dynast who ruled western Lycia.

Letoon, on the other hand, was the cult center of Xanthos, the ancient federal sanctuary of the Lycian province and Lycian League of Cities. As many inscriptions found at the site demonstrate, the federal sanctuary was the place where all religious and political decisions of the ruling powers were declared to the public. The famous trilingual inscription, dating back to 337 B.C., features a text inLycian and Greek as well as an Aramaic summary and was discovered near the temple of Apollo. In the sanctuary of Letoon, three temples are dedicated to Leto, Artemis and Apollo. In addition, the site includes the ruins of a nymphaeum dating back to Hadrian, built on a water source that was considered sacred.
