Cabinets of curiosities, also known as wonder-rooms (German: Wunderkammer) were encyclopedic collections of objects whose categorical boundaries were, in Renaissance Europe, yet to be defined. Although more rudimentary collections had preceded them, the classic cabinets of curiosities emerged in the sixteenth century. The term cabinet originally described a room rather than a piece of furniture. Modern terminology would categorize the objects included as belonging to natural history (sometimes faked), geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art (including cabinet paintings), and antiquities. In addition to the most famous and best documented cabinets of rulers and aristocrats, members of the merchant class and early practitioners of science in Europe formed collections that were precursors to museums.

I have a few pictures like this of my cats sitting in the window with their shadow photogenically projected on the wall. Example: flic.kr/p/8QR4ez

Medical Oddities, Nature's Anomalies and Carnival Gaffs: A Pop Up Book for Children, a rather odd book from the Colmore Collection.

The mummy face in the middle does not appear to be made from paper. It has a pliable leathery texture. It is quite similar to a mummy that was part of the American Dime Museum's collection. There is no author or publishing information listed anywhere in this volume. I suspect it is a one of a kind privately produced work. Note that the titular card has the word "anomalies" misspelled. It appears correctly on the cover and title page of the tome itself. Many of the items depicted throughout the book appear in other forms as part of the Colmore Collection.

Polaroid Week, spring 2025, day 4

I found these Holga close-up filters among my camera paraphernalia and have been trying them out with my DianaStax. Since they aren't an official accessory for the Diana F+, I had to experiment with the focal distance. This is probably the best close-up picture I've captured so far, with several others really not in focus. But some of those focus mistakes still look good, so you'll likely see a few of them during the rest of Polaroid Week.

I have been collecting these sponges from my local beach, Newport, Australia for approx. 20 years. This display is less than half the entire collection. After big storms many treasures can be found. Can you spot my little white crocheted one?

(If you click on the Image to enlarge, you'll be glad you did: I promise.)

Quite a collection in a window on Congress in Austin, shot on their "First Thursday" street fair celebration.

With the cashier's permission, I took this picture today in the SoHo Evolution store. It is a veritable Wunderkammer, filled to the ceiling with animal sculls, taxidermy, gemstones, and other exotic curiosities.

An exhibition exploring the poetics of hidden, untouched and curious collections from around the world in photographs and artifacts, by Joanna Ebenstein, co-founder of Observatory and creator of Morbid Anatomy.

Wunderkammer

In the dimly lit corners of an old mansion, I found solace among the wunderkammers—cabinets of curiosities brimming with enigmatic artifacts. Each object whispered tales of distant lands and forgotten times, igniting my imagination with their mysteries.

I became captivated by the allure of these collections, spending hours meticulously cataloging rare specimens and peculiar oddities. My obsession grew as I sought out elusive treasures, driven by an insatiable curiosity to uncover their secrets.

But as my wunderkammer expanded, so did the weight of its mysteries. The line between collector and curator blurred, and I found myself consumed by the quest for the ultimate artifact—a key to unlock the universe's deepest enigmas.

In the end, I realized that the true wonder of the wunderkammer lay not in its contents, but in the boundless curiosity it inspired—a testament to the insatiable human desire to explore the unknown.
