And australia was like, WTF, mate?

In the East River (in New York City), just south of the Queensboro bridge, there's this black pipe-like thing floating in the water. It doesn't appear to be a solid piece, and it looked like it wasn't even water-tight. There are platforms with some weird-looking things on them every 20 feet or so. As far as I could tell, it didn't look like it was going to or from anything at all. (Posted to Ask Metafilter)

Mefi user bemis found the answer. It's a "Protective Fender System installed in the East River to protect the [FDR Drive Outboard Detour Roadway] from any possible wayward marine vessels". See this long article about the construction that's just barely visible on the left edge of the other photo.

Lies Baas 2010 While posting a comment on my flickfriend 'lowrevolution's' stream I found myself in the 'inbetween' world of Flickr. Had to make a picture of it, because I was kinda scared it would disapear on me the shot is not that well composed....sorry about that one.

No, seriously... WTF is this crap?! I go to Walgreens for my "day after Easter Cadbury free-for-all" and all they have are these imitation creme "eggs?"

Jason Chua and Daniel Makoski: 10,000 miles in a Velcro-covered truck. WTF?

10:40 a.m. Session 2: Makers, Artmakers, Peacemakers

DANIEL MAKOSKI, Design Pirate

JASON CHUA, Chief Truck Driver

On one fateful afternoon in Pasadena, California the paths of Daniel, design lead for Motorola?s Advanced Technology and Projects group, and Jason, co-founder of Stanford?s SparkTruck maker-mobile, converged in a parking lot at Caltech.

After a meeting that involved at least 15 slices of pie, they set out on an epic

journey across the country in a Velcro-covered van to see what would happen when they let college students loose with hackable smartphones and state-of-the-art tools, including 3-D printers and laser cutters.

Over the course of the six-month, 10,000 mile road trip that took them to 12 universities and all four Maker Faires?the MAKEwithMOTO tour?Daniel and Jason gained surprising insights on just how personal technology can become.

Ça faisait longtemps que je voulais faire une photo d'élastique de près. C'est maintenant chose faite. A ranger dans la catégorie "Absurde".

This was definitely a lot funnier walking home from downtown Athens crunkified. I see now that the nurse is not actually sitting on the kid in the wheelchair like I originally thought. Still interesting though.

Care to wager a guess on what you think this is? The ruler is there for a sense of scale.
