A-La-Mode
Fair One: 'Tis balmy eve, and gentle zephyrs blow
With mildness seldom seen of late.
If you'll permit me, I would like to go

This is an example of a Victorian-era acquaintance card, which was also referred to in the nineteenth century as a flirtation, escort, or invitation card.
The Encyclopedia of Ephemera (New York: Routledge, 2000), p 4, provides this definition: "A novelty variant of the American calling card of the 1870s and 1880s, the acquaintance card was used by the less formal male in approaches to the less formal female. Given also as an 'escort card' or 'invitation card,' the device commonly carried a brief message and a simple illustration.... Flirtatious and fun, the acquaintance card brought levity to what otherwise might have seemed a more formal proposal. A common means of introduction, it was never taken too seriously."
Here's CNN's take on acquaintance or escort cards: "So, may I see you home? In the late 19th century, Americans exchanged cheeky personalized cards to start a romance. Call them the ink-and-paper Tinder. Escort cards helped people find intimacy while breaking the strict conventions of social interaction."
That's the description of a video that appeared on CNN's Great Big Story today (February 12, 2016). The short piece (1:25) uses reproductions of my collection of acquaintance cards (see my complete set on Flickr or the ones I've posted on Ipernity so far) to present The 19th Century Tinder: Welcome to the Racy World of Escort Cards over on YouTube (don't miss my acknowledgement at the end of the video).
For those who may not be familiar with the sometimes naughty Tinder, Wikipedia calls it a "location-based dating and social discovery application (using Facebook) that facilitates communication between mutually interested users, allowing matched users to chat."
So, were acquaintance or escort cards--like the one above--the nineteenth-century equivalent of Tinder, as the video suggests? I don't really think that formally dressed Victorian men and women secretly gave each other cards in order to hook up like we see in the video. Although some of the cards may sound like cheesy pickup lines to modern ears, I think it's more likely that school kids and young adults used them to break the ice, get a laugh, or start a conversation rather than to arrange a tryst.
In reality, acquaintance cards provided a lighthearted and humorous way to parody the more formal exchange of calling cards that took place in Victorian times. Acquaintance cards were sold by the same companies that supplied calling cards, rewards of merit, and advertising trade cards, and they show up alongside these other printed items in the scrapbooks that were popular with women and children in the nineteenth century.
Back to the Yum Yum A La Mode card. Here's how it was advertised in the Argus and Patriot newspaper, Montpelier, Vermont, on September 18, 1878, p. 4. The following text appeared along with the "Yum Yum" illustration:

If you want to smile all over your face for six months, just send for the Red Hot Flirtation Cards, 50 for 25 cts. Samples sent for 2 3-ct. stamps. Remember these cards are Red Hot Regular Tearers!! They cannot be beat. We stump everything of the kind. You will laugh till you cry if you send for them. P.O. stamps are better than silver to send in a letter, and are all the same to us. Write your orders plain. Address Marshall & Co., 35 Sudbury St., Boston, Mass.

Nếu E vẫn chưa yêu A, hãy gọi tên A mỗi ngày, thật chậm rãi và đầy ngọt ngào, gọi tên A như để khắc tạc cái tên đẹp đẽ ấy trong ♥ E, như để tên A quấn quýt trong tâm trí E, để E k bao giờ có thể quên được cái tên ấy… "Pon" =))
Nếu E vẫn chưa yêu A, mỗi ngày hãy thử điều tra một ít về A, để biết A thích gì, ghét gì, sợ gì, muốn gì… Để E hiểu thêm về con người A, để E càng khám phá càng thấy A bí ẩn và mỗi khi phát hiện ra một bí ẩn nào đó, E sẽ hét lên vì thích thú…
Nếu E vẫn chưa yêu A, hãy nhắn tin với A hàng ngày và đừng xóa tin nhắn vội E nhé. Một lúc nào đó buồn buồn, mở tin nhắn của A đọc lại, những tin nhắn dễ thương đó sẽ khiến E bật cười cho xem ! E hãy coi đó là liều thuốc cho căn bệnh buồn chán của mình và những lỗ hổng trong cuộc sống của E sẽ được những viên thuốc yêu thương ấy chữa lành…
E vẫn chưa yêu A sao? ...
Một buổi chiều, khi hoàng hôn thả mình xuống nhân gian nhuốm hồng cảnh sắc, mình E dạo bước công viên, mình E giữa những cặp đôi đang hạnh phúc tay trong tay, chỉ mình E thôi nhé, E có thấy chạnh lòng, có thấy cô đơn, có cần một bàn tay ai đó nắm nhẹ k?
Hãy thử nghĩ về A đi.
Sẽ thế nào nếu A bên E lúc đó?
Sẽ thế nào hả E?
Giờ E hãy nhắm mắt lại tưởng tượng ra một ngày thế giới k còn A, cuộc sống của E còn lại gì?
Chắc E cũng sẽ chẳng còn là E nữa !
Em! E thấy E quan trọng với cuộc sống của E thế nào rồi chứ?
E vẫn chưa yêu E hay E chưa phát hiện ra mình đã yêu A từ lúc nào k hay? =)) I know I'm so confident =))
Bây giờ thì E biết cách yêu A rồi nhé! E phải chăm chỉ luyện tập, phải nhớ A mỗi ngày một ít !
Biết đâu E lại là học trò ưu tú, biết cách yêu A hơn chính bản thân mình, biết yêu A từ sáng sớm đến đêm khuya, yêu A trong từng suy nghĩ, yêu A chẳng hề đắn đo, yêu A bằng tất cả những gì E có, bằng một ♥ chân thành, mãnh liệt ^^
Sẽ có một ngày E biết yêu A.. ♥
VÀ NẾU MÌNH YÊU NHAU ...
Nếu mình yêu nhau, hãy cùng A đón mỗi sớm bình minh E nhé. K phải bằng cách ở bên A mọi lúc, chỉ cần nhắn tin hoặc gọi điện chúc A một ngày tốt lành :x
Nếu mình yêu nhau, đừng vội vàng quay bước khi A giận dỗi. Lời nói đôi khi trở thành vô dụng, hãy chỉ nắm tay a thật chặt thôi nhé, đc k E?
Nếu mình yêu nhau, chớ vì A mà xa cách những người thân, bạn bè xung quanh E. Yêu thương k có nghĩa trong mắt ta chỉ có duy nhất người mình yêu. Yêu thương là phải biết cân bằng tất cả mọi mặt của cuộc sống.
Nếu mình yêu nhau, hãy để chúng ta đc sống là mình. Nghĩa là E hãy là E, A vẫn là A. Đừng ép nhau thay đổi bất cứ điều gì cả. Vì nếu cần thay đổi những điểm xấu trong mỗi người, tự tình yêu trong chúng ta sẽ là cần chỉ đường dẫn lối.
Nếu mình yêu nhau, có thể k cười cợt những lúc A tha thẩn kể các câu chuyện vụn vặt trong ngày, đc k E ? :))
Nếu mình yêu nhau, đừng hứa hẹn những điều xa xôi, hãy chỉ ở bên A và yêu A thôi, đc k E? ♥

It's that time of year when lists are being written, filled with all those needs and wants... I always struggle with what to put on my list because I truly don't need anything. Wishes though are another story... I wish for good health for all of my family and friends (this is definitely #1 because it's been such a difficult year... too much sadness and loss), I wish for laughter, happiness and love in their lives, for a world where kids can grow up without fear of walking down the street or playing on a playground. All of those are the things that really matter. But for the photographer in me and some big dreaming... a shiny new Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens would be oh so nice. :-)))
What is on your photography wish list... either something that's been missing from your ensemble or that one thing that would make you over-the-hill ecstatic (lenses, bags, filters...a new camera)?
