Netherlands, Rotterdam. Flickr Meetup Kop van Zuid April 2007. Local dog Sheila.

We were having a coffee break at a pavement during the meetup. Local dog Sheila knows hows to take care of her own needs. She found a milk carton next to one of the tables. She seems quite smart doesn't she?

Are you familiar with what animals think? Can you read your pet's mind? Did you major in Canine Psychology?

Let's play a game. Fill in the blanks and tell us your take on Sheila's thoughts during each of the 4 frames. Replace the dots with Sheila's thoughts in English.

1. .....

2. .....

3. .....

4. .....

You need a Flickr account to join. Enter your entry as a comment, so all can enjoy.

The following contest is now closed, however you can still leave your take on Sheila's thoughts or write other comments, of course

The person who comes up with the funniest or most remarkable lines will receive a small poster size print (20x30cm / 7.8" x 11.8") of this photo by mail. The closing date for this contest is (now: was) Sunday June 17 2007 11PM GMT.

An independent jury will pick out the winner. The winner will be anounced on this page. I shall contact the winner by Flickr mail. Good luck!

As she sat on the porch steps of the old farmhouse in the late afternoon sun, she gazed out at the great golden wheat field stretching out before her. The hulk of the old rail steam locomotive still sitting there in the middle of the field where it had been abandoned so many years before. Its glory days of grandeur, when it would roar into stations with massive billows of smoke and steam surrounding it...a thing of awe and beauty..were over. Too heavy to move, and not much use to anybody now, except for the animals that took refuge under it, and the birds that nested in it, or perched on it for a better view of the field. The smaller hawks could often be seen sitting motionless on top of it, ever vigilant to the slightest movement of the small rodents that scurried around at the base of the wheat stalks.

She had always loved that the train was here. It was an anomaly in this spot, and yet it belonged. It lent a nostalgic element of perhaps a grander time when things moved at a slower pace. A reminder of things past, but their memory treasured. Its presence was again familiar and welcoming to one long gone from this place.

In the waning light of day, crows, cawing loudly to each other, made their way across the field in wide-spread, loose flocks, heading towards their evening roosting spot. Every now and then, a large mixed flock of blackbirds, would rise suddenly from the ground where it had been feeding, and wheel in great sweeping, tumbling movements over the field. Such a beautiful thing to watch, the way they moved as one. So unified, as if they were being directed by some unknown, and hidden force.

Everything was the same as she remembered it. It was as if time had stood still here, while she had moved on. Four years did not seem like such a long time, but it felt like an eternity...and in that time she had changed. No longer the person she once knew. A hard edge was present now. An almost impenetrable shell around her. Locked down. The pain of loss buried deep.

Flickers of memory seeped in, and then were banished quickly before they could take root, and lead her down a road she did not want to travel, but they were powerful and persistent, and she knew they would be back with the relentlessness of waves breaking onto the shore. A tidal flow that was unstoppable...just brief lulls in between...momentary respites...before another cascading surge.

After so much time away..and all the pain.... she felt soothed now by the soft, swaying movement of the wheat..the damp, rich smell of the earth beneath her feet..the familiar sounds of the birds and insects..and the light breeze blowing back her hair. The field seemed almost a real presence....a comforting entity.. as the wind stirred it in great undulating waves of light and shadow before her. It was as if it had always been here, and always would be, long after she was gone. She could never explain this place to anyone. It was a place you had to be in, to understand its pull...its great power. There was always something about it that made her feel rooted, and safe. She felt at home here in a way she felt nowhere else. Her aimless wandering for so long...looking for escape....looking for something..had finally led her back here.

As she sat watching the sun slowly sink toward the far horizon, the breeze lifted again, and she felt its warm touch on her face like a caress. It brought with it the earthy, sweet scent of the wheat which she inhaled deeply. It was good to be home here again. It felt like a great weight had suddenly lifted. She sensed something shift inside her...just a very slight feeling, but it was there. For the moment...she could hold on to that.

Speaking of fun, someone recently asked: Can you think of a word that uses all the vowels including the y?

Unquestionably!

Yes, we can think of hundreds of words like this. Each of this week's words has the usual vowels and the sometime-vowel y. Such a word is known as a euryvocalic, from Greek eury- (wide) + vocalic (relating to vowels).

Today's word is autokinesy, from Greek auto- (self) + kinein (to move). Earliest documented use: 1678.
