Michael Chuck loves a good book store. I do, too!

Another shot of Amy in her writing room on Brown Street in Iowa City. She's still writing, except now she's doing it in L.A.

I hung out with these crazy people today talking about songwriting. They're all in a summer writer's workshop at the Hugo House. We ended up talking about alopecia, evil record deals and status anxiety. Sweet!

Just going through the wayback machine and thinking about Diane's pending move to Iowa City. This season of Girls has made me remember with fondness this 2005 trip to Iowa City. Here's Amy in the house on Brown Street, I think, on the morning after her 30th birthday.

My version of Stacey's chart from Two Writing Teacher's.

Poet Nikky Finney, who recently won the National Book Award, spent an evening at The Williston Northampton School as part of the 14th annual Writers' Workshop Series. Finney spoke to students, faculty, and members of the community before teaching the Writers' Workshop class.

This is a list of qualities and behaviors that my students came up with after carefully studying great, good, and mediocre memoirs.

This went with a lesson on how to choose a seed idea for writing a draft. I got the idea for the chart from Stacey at Two Writing Teachers and then added a few things of my own.

Perhaps the view is too spectacular. It can be distracting when trying to concentrate on a book or magazine. So the next time I return I'll be sure to not sit in this area when reading.

Former BBC Spotlight presenter Teresa Driscoll is touring Devon Libraries with a workshop for aspiring writers. The workshop is called "Short Stories: for pleasure and for profit". Everyone is enjoying their day at Exeter Library.

I admit I have not yet read any of Anaya's works, but I am a fan of Bradbury. I even got to shake his hand when he came to AFI to speak to us, when I was a student there. I always love the story in the afterword to "Fahrenheit 451" where he wrote the first draft in the basement of the UCLA library. They had typewriters for rent there, ten cents per every 30 minutes. Bradbury said he was literally writing a dime novel, typing as furiously as he could in order to use up as few dimes as possible (he was, after all, still a struggling writer living from paycheck to paycheck). His novel (and even the Truffaut film made from it) stands as a testimony to the love of the written word and our love for books.

Short Story workshop at Dartmouth Library with broadcaster, journalist and author Teresa Driscoll.

That's me second from the right... the scrawny, surly-looking one.

But contrary to my demeanor, this was probably among the two best weeks of my adolescence. A workshop for teenagers aspiring to be writers, poets, musicians, etc. Names I have forgotten, but the memories last a lifetime.

While this discussion was going on, I wandered over to my right and got this view, out the third floor picture window, of the original blue building of the Pacific Design Center.

Then I panned to my left and got this. It is an incredible view out these windows.
