On an afternoon walk around Riverway

After a week of insanely gorgeous winter weather (frost, sun, fog, snow, all my favourites!), we're back to the regular Vancouver rain today... which means I'm forcing myself to stay indoors and catch up on neglected emails and edits. Here's a shot from earlier in the week... Was driving home after a day of chasing sunbeams and then pulled over to quickly snap some photos in this frost, too. Just can't resist these winter wonderland scenes!

The NS8105 locomotive emerging from one of the few if only rail tunnels left in the state of Illinois.. This short tunnel has a tight curve built into the bluff. Trains cross the Mississippi River and almost immediately enter this tunnel, and then curve 90-100+ degrees to the South. A older worman in probably her mid 60's rolled up in a car on the other side of the tracks to also photograph it.

I was told that if you look closely at the "middle" rock formation, it resemebles a woman washing clothes on a washboard. It does look like it, but maybe it was a man washing and not a woman 😁!

Have a great new week my friends!

This classic scene is easy to find, it is by the road off the main A9 into Dalwhinne from the south, if you look towards Drumochder you cannot fail to notice it. The bridge has been there a long time, what would its builders have thought of the railway? And this scene has been photographed around this period by some of the greats of the time, the never to be surpassed Bill Anderson has it in his posthumous book Diesels in Scotland, and he took it in snow. Les Nixon has taken it, and it also appears in Andrew Vines Diesels in the Highlands. He shot a 26 here on a northbound freight. And Andrew Vines in his caption tells of what you will see now, for there is an eleven kilo-volt power line running parallel to, and to this side of the railway, it has been there a while.Time marches, you can't mitigate for that.

The Picturesque Style: Italianate Architecture

A blog devoted to American Italianate architecture of the 19th century. This blog features architectural analyses of Italianate domestic buildings with images, and historical information.

The Worman-Apgar House, Frenchtown, NJ. 1869

Moving on from Utica, the Worman-Apgar house in Frenchtown, NJ is an impressive and aggressively vertical irregular plan Italianate. The verticality is created by the narrowness of each of the facade planes. Although built in 1869, the house is far out of date, demonstrating the style of the 1850s and none of the complex carpentry associated with the late 60s and 70s. Nonetheless, it is a very high style example of the tradition of early Italianate designs. The house, finished in stucco scored to look like stone, is simple in its ornament. Large flat wall surfaces are pierced with round headed windows with thick moldings, and a flat architrave molding delineates the entablature. The thickness of the overhang is particularly notable as is the lack of brackets. The first floor flat head windows are without ornament. As on a lot of early-type designs, the fun is confined to interesting pieces of carpentry. Here, the curved tent-roof wooden awnings with fringes, the Juliette balcony over the door, and the simple, thin porch relieve the facade's solemnity. Also of interest is the slender wooden (flushboard) tower, which, at the top stage has a segmental arched window with a Henry Austin style eared molding. The cornice of the tower on all four facades has a pediment, a particularly elegant and vertical feature.

The house really does feel like an Austin design to me and it resembles, in its ornament, the Norton house. The front has a well preserved iron fence (see below). I think that the paint scheme for this house, although quite solemn, is very historically accurate in its attempt to suggest a stone construction.

Believe it or not, she spent the whole morning in church then at Bible study before meeting us for a photo shoot. I asked her if she wore that outfit to Bible study and she said, "Ummmmm, no."

This is part of a new video tutorial entitled "A World of Textures" that I recently put together. Included is also 100 textures, depending on the package you choose.

I like the fact that, despite they look so different from each other, they were doing the same; relaxing while reading a book.

Shows protests in the same place 2018/2025 with/without Western involvement. To tell the truth, there was a programme in Romania called "Restart România" involving several Western nations, not just US, aimed at mobilizing Romanians to use the internet to attack "corrupt mentality" - that is to attack the Government.

This programme is said to have been created in 2012, when the austerity right-wing goverment lost parliamentary elections and to have involved around 150.000 people.

About this:

romanialibera.ro/special/restart-romania-o-invitatie-la-l...

In 2012:

"Each project was supported with 5,000 euros by the US embassy. "Such online projects have the potential to bring about change. What is happening now in Romania is worrying. Democracy is being attacked step by step and you can't know where the end is. We are trying to open the door to civil society and make the world understand how important transparency is. We have projects not only in Romania, but also in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bosnia," Chris Worman, one of the volunteers involved in the Restart Romania project, told us." - translated from Romanian with google translate.

There has been suspicion all along about Western involvement in 2017-2018 protests in Romania. If you look at what's happening now, it seems to confirm the suspicions. Without foreign involvement, the gang is small.

By the way, this meeting/protest on March 15 2025 was supposed to be synchronized with large scale pro-EU protests in Budapest and Belgrade. However, in Bucharest it didn't turn out as expected.
