"Soldier boy made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one only son
But he served us well
Bred to kill not to care
Just do as we say
Finished here greeting death
He’s yours to take away" (Hetfield/Ulrich/Hammett)
Into the World War II Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno Italy are engraved the names of 3095 Disposable Heroes missing during the operation Shingle in Anzio.
In honor of Memorial Day here in the USA, when we remember those who gave their lives serving our nation, here is the National World War II Memorial on the Washington Mall.
Of all the many monuments and memorials in Washington D.C., the World War II and Lincoln Memorials are my personal favorites, and they sit opposite each other lying East-West with the Reflecting Pool in between. The side you see here is looking North, and is in remembrance of the war fought in the Atlantic and European Theaters. The south side of the memorial which is behind me is in honor of the war fought in the Pacific Theater.
56 granite pillars form a semi-circle around these fountains, one for each US state and the eight territories associated with the USA at war’s end in 1945. The name of each state or territory is etched into the top of each pillar, along with a mounted wreath in honor of those who lost their lives.
On the west side of the memorial is the Freedom Wall, where 4,048 mounted gold stars reflect above a pool. Each star represents 100 Americans who died in the war. When Americans refer to Gold Star families, they mean families who lost loved ones due to military service. The inscription here at the wall reads, “Here we mark the price of freedom”.
It’s actually a very peaceful place, especially at sunrise, when you can listen to the rush of water and enjoy the flow of the fountains without traffic or tourists around.

This is a tank firing range the Nazis used under the 2.world war.
Unfortunately it was used as well for executing people.
The concrete walls are 10 meters high and the meaning was to hit the middle of the hole, 300 meters down the line.
I don't think there is many shooting ranges like this, at least not in Norway.
The first mass grave in Norway was found here.
Lots of history walking in the forest here, where you can see the gravestones and fresh flowers.
Operation Shingle (January 22, 1944), during the Italian Campaign of World War II, was an Allied amphibious landing against Axis forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno, Italy. The operation was commanded by Major General John P. Lucas and was intended to outflank German forces of the Winter Line and enable an attack on Rome. The resulting combat is commonly called the Battle of Anzio. (Read the article on wikipedia).
Unfortunately, this is only a very small part of the cemetery.

Well-equipped German soldiers pose for a photograph somewhere in France. Really cool elements like flare gun, white helmets and more..

I wrote a few days ago that my photos from Amsterdam in September 2017 would be the last I would upload that were taken with the Fuji X–Pro 2... Well, I was wrong, as there are also photographs from our May 2018 trip to Verdun and the surrounding areas and all the very moving memories from The Great War that took place there, among other places...
Those were taken in May 2018, so obviously I still had my Fuji gear at that time.
The majestic stone gate is all that is left of the château of Soupir, built in the 19th century in the Chemin des Dames area, and destroyed in 1917. A symbol of the ravages brought by The Great War.

On the day of our Annual Remembrance of the Dead, the Avro Lancaster PA474 overflew several places in the Netherlands and Belgium, where in the Second Worldwar planes were shot down.
Of the 7.377 Lancaster bombers that were build, only 17 are preserved and two of them are still in flying condition. The expected lifespan of these planes was 21 missions, it is not difficult to guess what this meant for the crews...
Thanks and endless respect to those, who gave their lives for peace and freedom!
Just before the end of the second worldwar the Nazi's made a mass grave in the woods of Ees (Drenthe). This mass grave is 25 by 3 meters and was ment for members of the resistance. Luckely it never came this far.
Lump in the throat time watching these two graceful planes turn with such precision and still look as good over 70 years on.
