Arched ceiling, painted in beautiful 24 KT Gold Leaf , and plaster detail. The Lourve Museum, Paris, France.
This massive cross probably hung above the main altar of a church and is one of the finest examples of such a crucifix outside of Italy. The green paint that normally provided the foundation for flesh tones has been left uncovered to suggest the pallor of death, capturing the physical reality of Christ's suffering on the cross. Mary and St. John the Evangelist, who witnessed the crucifixion, occupy the ends of the cross. Exhibit at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
