The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, and located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. The museum was inaugurated on 18 October 1997 by former King Juan Carlos I of Spain. Built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Cantabrian Sea, it is one of several museums belonging to the Solomon R. I photographed this 3XN designed building for the Blue Planet Aquarium. This building won the world architecture festival last year, and its easy to see why.

5) I chose this piece because before this class I’ve never noticed how the pediments are decorated with floral motifs. Much of the discussions and readings are about the various types of columns, how they are different from each other and how the styles changes over time. None of the courses through my studies of architecture have identified plant motifs as part of the decoration of ancient architecture. Seeing plants depicted in architectural elements reinforces the connection that people have with nature. Especially from a time period when architecture was built as larger than life. When it was used to show power or as a means to connect with the world of the Gods.
