I designed a world of my own
Where there are two moons to dream
Where the long avenue has no end
Where maybe I won't be alone
Because a different world
it's a common dream

The last Wednesday in May each year is world Otter Day.
So a choice from the archives and a visit to Melbourne Zoo.

This is a collection of miniature garden gnomes I discovered on a walk around my neighborhood. It is rather heavily cropped due to my not noticing some not family friendly gnomes off to the left side until I started editing this.
The constantly moving clouds and fog made for an everchanging interplay of light and dark as we cruised through Paradise Bay in Antarctica.

The Sherpa sends me a photo from the 43rd floor of his office building in the city every morning, Usually around sunrise.
This morning he sent me the photo on the right. Our city blanketed in smoke, like a thick soup, at hazardous levels. The first time I think it has reached hazardous levels.
No-one really knows the damage from long-term smoke inhalation yet. We know it's not good.
It brings home the reality to us of those that have been living through this for months and I know some countries this is the norm.
Welcome to our brand new world.
Lincolnshire seemed to have a vague look of the Serengeti this evening. The ground is parched and it is hotter than it really ought to be. The evening sky absolutely came to life and lit up somehow reflecting what is happening in so many parts of the world right now. I have always loved the work of Ansel Adams, so to hear the fires are so close to Yosemite is troubling. What would he think of what we have done?

Today is World Giraffe Day, an annual event initiated by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to celebrate the longest-necked animal on the longest day or night (depending on which hemisphere you live!) of the year – June 21st each year.
There is still only limited information available on giraffe in the wild – so little that we often refer to giraffe as ‘forgotten giants’.
Giraffe in the wild have been largely ignored and under-researched. This situation is slowly being addressed. With a few exceptions, giraffe are in decline throughout the continent and the need for a concerted conservation effort has never been more urgent.
There are four species of giraffes and nine subspecies listed below.
Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi) 35,000
Northern giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) 5,600
Kordofan giraffe (G. c. antiquorum) 2,000
Nubian giraffe ( G. c. camelopardalis ) 3,000
West African giraffe (G. c. peralta) 600
Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata) 15,780
Southern giraffe ( Giraffa giraffa ) 54,750
Angolan giraffe (G. g. angolensis) 17,750
South African giraffe (G. g. giraffa) 37,000

Another handmade metal ornament from the Chinese company Ali Express. I love their things in this category.
Happy Saturday
Of all of the severe weather phenomena in our part of the world I think I fear freezing rain the most. It makes all forms of transportation (including walking) very dangerous and often impossible. It prunes the forest felling large and small trees alike, often, onto the power lines that are so essential to those of us who live in the hinterland. All the while, it adds sparkling beauty to an already beautiful nature.

No, it is not Mars, but Elgol, Skye. You don't often get beautiful sunsets here, but it always seems to deliver a mystical appeal, with constant changing light and colour.
A view of a 1½-inch washer with severe etching and scarring and its surreal reflection in water. The frame represents a span of 1½-inches across.
I found this washer on the ground while out-and-about and was taken by all the scarring and etching it had endured; it looked as though it had traveled a thousand light years from another world.
Strobist info:
The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights and a red LED flashlight. The speedlights were positioned at 8- and 4-o'clock, one foot above and two feet away from the washer. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes.
The red LED was used to illuminate the background and for rim light and exposed for 1.6 s. A warm overhead room light contributed to the gold etching highlights within the washer and the orange hue to the red LED.
The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

I can fall, with you to catch me
I can climb, with you beneath me
I can feel, your world inside me"

I really like alleyways like this, so of course I couldn't resist trying to take a picture here. We are in La Orotava and I took this shot in the early afternoon. I took advantage of the strong reflection of the sunlight from the row of houses opposite.
