A few of us drove an hour and a half north along the Susquehanna River this morning to meet up with Spencer & Sarah for a late breakfast. Spencer was an RD at Messiah for four years and he and his wife moved to NY this fall to live and care for Sarah's mother. About twice a week someone across campus says "I sure miss Spencer"... he was well loved here. It was great to see these two today.
Higher education is such a dynamic and changing place. Sometimes I wonder why I work in a job that always involves so much change... most likely I will have a new staff each each. Students change too. Last week when I visited NWC one of the admins in Student Affairs said she saw me out the window and exclaimed "Amy VDW!" and their workstudy apparently said "who's Amy VDW?" The admin said "you don't know Amy? She's a legend here.." But, yes, that's what happens in my profession... students come and go and although staff may stay a bit longer than the students their stories eventually fade away as well.
I know change can be good... it brings new people and thoughts into my life... so why is it I resist it so?
