I looked out of my kitchen window to see this on top of a bungalow at the bottom of the garden. Looks like the bungalow is growing.

Took a few pictures of the men at work, trying out my new camera, really.

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Sheffield.

Counting House & Workmens' Cottages, c1786-93.

Grade ll* listed.

The row of Workers' Cottages was built between 1786 and 1793. The Cottages traditionally housed the 'forgemaster' and his 'heater lad' who worked in the Tilt Forge, amongst other people. One of the cottages has been furnished to show a worker's living conditions in around 1840.

In the Counting House the works foreman and his clerk carried out all the administrative work for the site. Piece work produced by the workers was counted here, and payments were made to them. The counting house was later used as a crown scythe warehouse.

Abbeydale Works is an integrated site for the production of steel tools. Dating from c1714, it was mainly built in the period 1785-1830, and remained in continuous use until 1933. It is of outstanding importance as an example of this type of industrial plant and its characteristic design.
