Workmen seen boarding up windows and doors on the west side of the Illinois State Capitol Building on Saturday, January 16, 2021, as U.S. state capitals and Washington brace for potentially violent pro-Trump armed protests in wake of the U.S. Capitol Attack.

On Friday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker activated 250 National Guard troops following warnings from the FBI of potential threats to state capitols leading up to the presidential inauguration. The troops are being stationed at Camp Lincoln in Springfield, minutes away from the State Capitol Building should their presence be needed.

There's no Photoshop trickery here! The effect comes from the workmen being behind a green, gauze-like sheeting hung over chain link fencing. Bright sunlight illuminated them so they kind of dissolved into the shadows. Couldn't quite believe my eyes!

I was crossing over Marine Parade when I saw these 3 hi-viz workmen sitting in the bus shelter and thought what a lovely Brighton frame it made. There were another two workmen on the seats behind and a further one on the side. I noticed them from the central reservation and took a couple of shots before I crossed over to them. I think I took them by surprise when I asked to take their photo and having taken it asked their names.

The Oakdale Workmen's Institute was built in 1917 to serve as a focus for social, educational and cultural life within the newly established coal mining community there. It was funded by a loan from the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, which the miners then repaid over the following years.

The Institute eventually closed and was removed to St Fagans Museum in 1995.

There is some movement in here, not quite what I was after, but these guys were blade shearing, the old way. Two gentlemen standing by were the judges. Taken at the Nhill show, and the shearing is a feature for most of the day.

The photo was taken with my Nikon FE2 on Fujichrome slide film with a 50 mm lens in 1984. This was my first visit to India - 40 years ago.

I photographed the slide bracketing it with a Nikon D850 camera and enhanced the picture in Lightroom, Photoshop and Topaz.

Québec, Québec - novembre 2022.

Took a lovely walk this morning and although it wasn't as sunny as it had been yesterday I did find parts of town around us that I hadn't seen before. I shall be going on another trip to see what else there is around there.

I saw this in the driveway of a house that is being renovated and thought why not for my photo for today. It was as rusty as anything and made a good un-identical twin to the really rusty lorry the workmen had.

These men were working very diligently on a roof near where I was staying. Thankfully it was only one storey up but there was not a hard hat to be seen. Fortunately all seemed to go well. I was first attracted to take the shot because of the colours of the Jacaranda trees against the roof and the workmen' s overalls.

A castle of labour

At first sight palatial redbrick facades and artistically adorned gables on buildings dotted around a grassy square are more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence than a coal mine. This was exactly one of the ideas behind the architecture.

Today the “mansion of labour” in the west of Dortmund is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and impressive testimonies to Germany’s industrial history. The engine house with its famous Jugendstil (art nouveau) doorway is already an icon. But the museum’s outstanding industrial architecture is only one of many different attractive facets. The various sections of the exhibition will take you into a world of harsh working conditions, and the stories of the men and women who worked in coalmining during the 20th century will bring this vividly to life.

Québec, Québec - juin 2022.

Took a walk up to the old Pink Floyd villa on the outskirts of Pefkos, once owned by musician David Gilmour. It's been standing uninhabited and unloved for some years but has been sold and is now undergoing renovation.

As you can see, workmen were taking away the lovely old iron gates and railings and replacing with stone walls - presumably for more privacy and security.
