This specimen is a long-tongued bee of the family Magachilidae. During preparation the long labrum was taken care of in the shown way in order to prevent damage to the specimen. The split styrofoam here served to place the bee before pinning with a micropin.

I am asked about the colors in my photographs on regular basis. Part of the reason for the quality of the colors in my photographs is due to a color managed workflow. My color management starts with the color target in today's photograph. I photograph this target during sessions to calibrate my camera to the light. This helps to make sure what my eye is seeing is what my camera is seeing. The next step is to calibrate my monitor. The Spyder3 Pro is placed on my screen and a program displays colors on the screen. These colors are read by the Spyder3 Pro and a my monitor is adusted to make sure the colors are correct. The Professional lab I use sends me calibration data from their equipment and I use that in Photoshop to make sure what I see on my monitor will EXACTLY match the final printed image. SO if you have ever wondered about some of the way I get my photographs to look the way they do, this is all part of it.

A few weeks ago, I asked my blog readers if they had any questions that they would like me to answer. One person asked about my workflow, so that question is answered today on my blog.
Does anyone have any programs or tips that have improved and sped up your workflow? I think the think that has most helped me is adding Lightroom.

Playing with layout methods and found a cool mac workflow using Pages and Aperture. They make it so easy. In Pages I can see my Aperture pictures in the Media Browser. Once I was done with the layout, I hit print and saved as a .pdf which brought up a dialogue box with a choice to send back to Aperture.
