A tree located in the backyard of the BC Legislature commemorates all workers injured or killed in the workplace, and those who suffer from work-related illness or injury.
Along the way to tier cities like Shigatse, Gyantse and other townships, one meets alot of contruction workers like these, toiling to build embankments and paved roads.
Most were friendly enough to wave at the odd-intrusion of a tourist 4WD passing by.
It might have broken their monotony of work. At least it did mine of just looking at terrain for hours.

Workers are installing cables across the flood canal. According to the supervisor on location, this is to ease the work of cleaning up trashes from the river flow, because trashes are one of the factors in Jakarta's flooding.

Construction workers in Yueyang are primarily migrant workers from the surrounding countryside.
These men (and women) do not get paid very much, and they work very long and hard days. However, they appreciate the work that they find in the city that they did not have in the countryside.
Pray many construction workers will hear the Good News this year and that they will spread it to others.

Around the corner from both VDNKh and the Cosmonaut's museum is the recently restored Vera Mushkina statue.
On return and seeing these photos, a friend simply referred to this monument as 'powerful'. I confess to being overwhelmed by seeing it. This is perhaps the symbol of what the USSR wanted to portray itself as - positive, striking, daring, aspirational. I was only a child when it collapsed, but seeing this brought on a whole swell of conflicting emotions.
The monument itself is beautifully captured in one of - if not the - best short film I've ever seen - 'Vasily' by Stereotactic. vimeo.com/73873609 See 5:00 in.
But the image of the 1937 World's Fair, with the German and Soviet pavilions facing each other must be the defining moment, particularly in hindsight, given the devastation that was only two years away.

Our trip there was notable for a few things. Firstly, we arrived there in pleasant, overcast conditions, which quickly turned into grey rain, with us sheltering under trees. Just as it had dried up and we were starting to wander away, spectacular blue sky and sunlight arrived, transforming the statue to almost lifelike status.
This was the workers store.

The Gardens at Wortley Hall, close to Sheffield have a long association with the British Labour movement. It was purchased and restored in 1950 by a co-operative foundation, and is now a hotel & conference centre, and is used by several trades unions. The building, which dates back to 1586 was significantly altered in the 1740s, and is Grade 2* listed.
Wortley Hall was the base for SALT 10 - a classic car tour for Cold-War era vehicles.
