Shaji was telling me about a woman who is 8 months pregnant that he is helping. The woman llives in a room half the size of my hotel room with a communal toilet shared among many. She lives with her husband and 1 other man who is staying there. The rent for the 3 of them is 2000 rupees. They may each make only about 3000 /month.
I stayed at Shaji and Claudia's orphanage last night. The kids there are bright eyed, and full of energy. They have a couple of Mexican volunteers who have been taking them for football. The one guy can really play the guitar. He tried out my travel guitar and he was playing some Bossa Nova on it that was just amazing. I was so good I had to pinch myself to make sure that I was in India listening to a Mexican play my travel guitar that I bought in Canada.
Also went to the DICF this morning. It was really good. Saw Barry and Anne, the Canadians that took us under their wing when we came in 2004. Their retirement didn't quite take yet, and he is in Nepal, only here passing through.
Although not strictly volunteers, we, Dave Haxby and Javier García Sánchez, happily married since 2010 and together for more than 10 years. We are working every day during the renovation project. Often fetching, carrying and cleaning up after the team of builders, but we are enjoying every minute of it. When we break form working as junior members of the superbly skilled professional building team, we are project managing the whole build. Yes, it is our first time and yes, we are learning on the job.
It is stressful and difficult at times. We often find ourselves with a queue of people bursting to ask us questions. However, despite it´s challenges this is without doubt a very exciting time for us. We are living a dream, this is El gran sueño.
Marine came to stay with us in June 2013. We had just bought El gran sueño. The house had been unoccupied for 5 or more years. Marine helped us cleaning up some of the waste wood, abandoned in the garage of El gran sueño.
Here is Marine's statement reflecting on her long weekend with us at El gran sueño.
I met Dave and Javi in Brighton about one year ago, just before they moved to Spain. I have always been really impressed with their project and their wish of changing their way of life. In this way, coming to visit after one year in Spain seemed obvious, as I really wanted to see El grand sueño from the very start.
It was also my first experience in Asturias. I’ve been to Spain a couple of times, but only visited a few places in the Mediterranean coast and Barcelona. Like most people, the only thing I knew from Asturias was the city of Oviedo, because of the famous Woody Allen film, Vicky Christina Barcelona.
In the plane to Asturias I already thought that this part of Spain seemed really green. Now that I have visited Asturias I can honestly say that I’ve never seen such a verdant and mountainous place, with many beautiful views that take your breath away.
Before I had the chance to visit what is going to become El gran sueño, I was given a tour of Asturias with Dave and Javi as guides; Gijón and its lovely seafront, the gorgeous city of Oviedo and the mountains of Picos de Europa, which was the most beautiful walk I’ve ever done - but also, by far the longest! - All of these visits went with a nice bottle of cider, speciality of this area.
The day I saw El gran sueño finally came and after being described by Dave and Javi as the perfect place I realised that they were definitely right. The house is huge and the potential is even bigger. The property is full of character and overflown with lot of stories that are waiting to be related.
The massive garden offers an amazing view on the mountains and brings to light the beauty of the Asturian landscape. I stood there gaping.
After seeing the plans for the house and tried to think of what it will be when it’s finished, the only thing I want to do is come back again. Come back to see the achievement of El gran sueño and get a breath of fresh air on its beautiful ground.
Nuria has visited us a handful of times and is our number one PA assistant on Facebook. We have had more followers as a result of Nuria´s enthusiasm for El gran sueño than anyone else.
During the summer, Nuria helped us with some paint stripping, gardening and also provided lunch for us, a great day and one to be remembered at El gran sueño.
Thank you Nuria!
