A word cloud generated from audience text messages at an urban farming talk by Will Allen (www.cityfarmer.info/2011/01/28/will-allen-visits-vancouver/), a former pro basketball player who's built a hugely successful model for urban farming in the US. He's straight up, funny, uses lots of photos and stresses the importance of growing not just plants but soil too. Composting, crop rotation, etc. It was also cool to see 700 people out to hear him; a good indicator of the growing interest in urban agriculture and local food in Vancouver. If it continues to grow it'll be a BIG step toward sustainability given how largely food figures in the city's ecological footprint: talkgreenvancouver.ca/goals/lighter-footprint
I took ten speeches, all by Americans, all who were president or have run for president, and run them through the cloud generator at wordle.net. Can you name this speech?

I saw a neat Christmas word cloud on javadoug's site and asked him which program he used, and he told me is was Wordle. For this word cloud I copied and pasted into the Wordle program the instructions for my SpecSky group, and the result is this image. Pretty neat, eh?
Jonathan Feinberg is the creator of Wordle, and on his blog is a link to visualizations of all U.S. presidents' inaugural addresses.

Today's quickie challenge was a family tree. Some time ago I made the background mixed media image based on my parents and my birthplace, so today I added a wordcloud 'tree' of relatives' names; this goes down 3 generations fo great-grandkids and back 10 generations.

Sojourner Truth (1797 – November 26, 1883) was the self-given name, from 1843 onward, of Isabella Baumfree, an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. Her best-known extemporaneous speech on racial inequalities, Ain't I a Woman?, was delivered in 1851 at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. During the Civil War, Truth helped recruit black troops for the Union Army; after the war, Truth tried unsuccessfully to secure land grants from the federal government for former slaves.
