Project 7 for the year is a third tier of platform stairs going down into the forest. I have the platform concrete set, leveled, and ready to install the flats on top. Now if I can just get the rain to stop I can finish it off!

Today was routing day in the workshop. I got my drawer notches set, and now I am going to try and get the cabinet door routed so by the end of the week (knock on wood) I will be done with the front left side of this project. I hate that it’s taken forever, but sometimes that’s how projects go. I still want to get this project done by the end of the year, so that’s my deadline!

It is only the 8th of the month, and I have already completed one of my two projects for the month: another tier of platform stairs heading down into my forest.
I have adopted a new method for cementing these and leveling them, and it has worked like a charm. I will probably add two- perhaps three more and then I think I will be good. The Spring and Summer is coming soon, which means the ticks and chiggers will come out as well- better to get these done now while I can!

Working on the fourth tier of stairs and my tenth project for 2023. This one is just a little bit wider at 4 feet in width. The next will be six feet, and the final eight by eight feet.
Side note: I grossly underestimated the weight of this frame. Adding an additional cross beam and sixteen inches in width added a lot of weight. Looks like the next two I will have to build on-site instead on in the workshop and moving them out.

The door is assembled, squared, and ready for the three coats of polyurethane to make it nice, smooth, and best of all protected against nicks and dings.

All lined up! It’s not often, but some days I can actually schedule a lunch break. One of the great perks about working from home is that I can work in my garage on my projects on lunch, instead of sitting at my desk working through my lunch. I spent today finishing a few boards, ready to do some cuts on the table saw- hopefully tomorrow if not on Thursday.

The top drawer is assembled, glossed, and installed!
Now that this one is done I can focus on the door and the drawers on the right side of the cabinet. My goal is to be done with the front side of the cabinet before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Drawer one is set and ready for staining. The first drawer was really about getting the best technique down- the best way to route, cut, assemble, etc. Once this one is done, hopefully all the others will come together faster than this one.

Jake and I made a square raised plant bed for the greenhouse today. After buying the first two in kit form, I knew I could make my own. I wanted a deeper bed for planting green beans, so I can put in a climbing cage so they have someplace to run. Jake was a huge help.
My little dog Sophie has been having a hard time with her spine and arthritis, so I built a little stand for her food and water so she does not have to bend down to eat and drink.
So far it seems to be helping her, and it seems to fill the need. Sometimes I look at a project and see all the things that I could have done differently or better... but if it's working as it is needed I (usually try to) convince my OCD that it's not worth the effort and move on.

I have built two of the four cabinets for my workshop miter saw station, and now I am working on the door assembly, staining, varnishing, etc.
I fear that the long span of the door may prove to be too-wide of a span, and I will need to come back and make two separate doors for each cabinet, but for now I will go with this design.

This is my second project of 2023: a set of wood candle holders for my taper candles in the studio.
The wood is from a tree that fell on my property, and the stain is a new one to me called Special Walnut. I am going to let the varnish set and cure, add a sealant and then this one will be done.

I got the door attached with the cabinet hinges, and now the drawers are going in. Once the drawers are in I will cut the panel fronts, put a few coats of varnish on them and attach the handles. Then the front will be done!

And with that, the door is attached and the back side is done!
The top is currently drying from it’s second coat of varnish. One more coat and then I will be able to attach the top and the wheels and then I am done!

All of a sudden, and for no known reason, my saw is binding the wood again, making the saw lock up on the wood- very dangerous. I use this saw mostly for repeat long cuts on my wood projects. I can move on to other projects, but only for so long- and I really don't have much time to solve the problems of why it's binding.
RIDGID has been great with me in the past, so I may be making a call to them this week because I can't really not use this saw and expect to be timely on my projects!

As part of my 100-Day journey, I've been very productive in my projects. My cabinets got finished and installed, just some minor adjustments and this one's d-o-n-e!

Today was just a test run at routing text on an old scrap of wood. I tested one method, and hopefully will be able to test another couple methods this week before routing on the actual prototype. My focus was on the technique more than the form… some of the text came out a bit jaded and off, but the more I looked at it, the more I stepped back and thought to myself “I kind of like it this way- it kind of fits the song’s mood and feel.”
Of course, then I showed it to my wife who said “Cool- guess you can’t really do straight lines with a router…”
Nice.

Top row: Cabinet to store 33-1/3 RPM Long Play records. I used mostly scrap wood except for the back panel which I received from a friend. I left the blonde color to help see inside.
Bottom row: Cabinet to store stamp albums. I used a dowel jig to join two narrow boards to make a wider board to hold the albums without having them hang over the edge. More in notes. The triangles are cut to allow for a hand to hold the shelf steady when transporting it.
After much research and online discussions, I was able to align my rip fence and that fixed my problem. I finished my cuts and made 45 degree bevels on them to make French cleat hangers for my cabinets. Hopefully there will not be more complications!

Checking for squareness… the final drawer is completed and installed. I am 1 coat of varnish away from installing the door, then the top and the bottom wheels. Oh my- can the end be THIS close???

No sooner was I home from my parent’s house than I was back out in the workshop, working on the rolling tool cart. I have another coat of polyurethane on the cabinet door, and then cut all of the pieces for my drawers on the front side. It was a lot of cutting, and tomorrow will be a lot of routing, but it is certainly a labor of love!

I am down to cutting, staining, and assembling three more drawer-front panels and then the front of the tool care will be done!
The back side will have the same size drawers directly behind the front facing drawers, and the cabinet on the back side will house the air compressor hoses and a small pullout drawer for accessories. That will be much shallower, but the same essential design.
Here’s hoping that side two goes faster!

My custom tool cabinet is finally complete! I put the back on it and started filling it up with my tools; I think I might add some no-slip shelf liner on a few of the drawers- but I am so excited how it turned out. Now onto my next project!

I don't normally cut at 45 degrees on my wood projects, so I am testing a couple things before nailing and gluing this down.
It is hard to believe that I am down to the last few steps of this Rolling Tool Cabinet project. This project has been such a long-term project, but I think it will be worth it in the end.
I have to drill for the cabinet door hardware, attach the door, attach the top, and then attach the wheels and then I am done!

I finally finished my walking stick. I kept it at its natural color and added twelve coats of protectant on the wood itself to help harden and preserve it. I cannot wait to put it to good use and head out on another long hike!

I have the door frame routed and ready to put together. The inside panel will slide into this routed groove, and will then be stained a different color than the rest of the cabinet and frame. I want it to really stand out, so I’m thinking a cherry-stained panel on a natural wood frame will look nice.

The door panels are cut and routed! There is something so satisfying about watching a router blade swim through a piece of wood, like a hot knife to butter.
Next, I just have to let the door panel stain fully dry and then I can assemble and gloss the door. The end is getting closer!!

I am nearing the completion of my custom tool cabinet. There is that moment when you are putting in the drawers where you have this question running in the back of your mind saying “is this aligned and will it open smoothly?” Having a measurement off by even a sixteenth of an inch over a span of 2 feet can really make a difference, but every single drawer glides open without issue. Success!

I finished assembling my second custom CD cabinet at last. The first is about two feet wide and the second just about three. I’m so excited that this is almost done, and more so excited that every glove fit like a puzzle and fit together perfectly.
Next I have to attach the back and route some custom molding at the top and then just anchor them in to the wall. What a joy it’s been- a long and tedious but rewarding joy!

...Garage sale oak table had broken legs; so after a year I got these irons legs from an on-line auction. Refinished the oak table top and secured it to the newly painted iron legs. An old/new large coffee table. Our dog modeling in the background.

Holly and I picked up a couple of these at a local parking lot fair, thinking Emma would enjoy them.........they never made it out of my apartment, so I enjoyed a little play on light and shadow with some interesting shapes. As I was editing I also noticed some dof work.............
I finished the second half of my cabinet for my circular saw. I added the doors and then built a shelf that is custom-molded to the saw. The round blade and guard will fit down into the groove so it stays put, plus there are two wood pegs at the back where the cord can wrap around. It ended up better than I thought it would- now it’s on to the next project.

I have all of my drawer pieces routed, and now ready to sand them down. This is a tedious but necessary process for the polyurethane coating to properly adhere to the wood. I have my Christmas tunes and my ear protectants ready for the process (sanders and shop vacs running at the same time can be quite loud).
What else would I need?

I use makeup sponge wedges to gloss and stain my wood projects. I find they work better than brushes because they don’t shed bristles, and I can apply just the right amount of stain or glass at a time to get what it is that I want to accomplish.
My 2016 projects are coming along slowly but surely; I’m the kind of person who just wants to get in there and do something- but sometimes you have to take them one step at a time and be patient- especially with wood working!

I got so much done on my cabinet today… One of the most challenging cuts (to me) is cutting 45 degree angles and creating door frames with them. You have to make them align up and match, making a perfect square or else you have to pitch and start over. But my doors fit perfectly and were squared up so that was a sigh of relief. Plus I got to use my nail gun so it was a win-win!
