In the Herefordshire village of Luston. I love half timbered buildings, but this one seemed rather "heavy" to me. Apparently, it's typical of the area to have a stone base and half timbering above.

'Built in 1962, Coupar Angus Fire Station is located on Blairgowrie Road to the North West of the town.

The Fire Station has one front line appliance, a fully equipped Rescue Pump, and is staffed by personnel employed on the retained duty system. The current establishment for the station is a Watch Manager, 2 x Crew Managers and 9 firefighters with the majority working and living in the community of Coupar Angus.

The station personnel are the main asset and in addition to responding to emergencies they undertake a range of Community Safety activities that are primarily aimed at preventing deaths and injuries in fires.

The geographical area served by Coupar Angus is both urban and rural. The urban area covers the town of Coupar Angus which contains a small sized shopping area, small residential areas and small industrial areas. The rural area covered by the station includes a large farming community and numerous small villages. The population of Coupar Angus is just over two thousand two hundred.'

Papplewick Pumping Station contains two James Watt & Co beam engines constructed in the 1880s to pump water up around 200ft from subterranean sandstone, providing Nottingham with drinking water.

In the foreground on either side are wood-clad cylinders, which convert steam energy into motion. Up above (not visible), horizontal beams use the up/down motion to drive flywheels and hence the water pumps. In the background, towards the right, one of the flywheels can be seen, as well as the two spheres of the speed governor for that engine.

The architecture is elaborate for a building that houses functional engineering: gothic revival with egyptian motifs. This photo shows the ornately-decorated columns and stained glass windows.

Woodcladded outside facade of office and home

A lovely example of a thatched cottage and not a car in sight either.

As one of the first features to greet all who enter a home, the staircase plays a vital and central role in shaping how our spaces define us. For those who dream of stairs that make a more personal and reflective statement, a total transformation can be as simple as the installation of spectacular wood stair cladding in collaboration with a trusted hardwood specialist.
