Prob the last composition I'll post from a lovely night of light at the Bay of Birsay on Orkney. I wish I'd had a few more nights like this... when it came there was just something pure and wonderful about the light on Orkney!

Up until a few years ago spotting a white ibis in New Jersey was an event, Usually we would have a few juvies come north at the end of the summer, driven by the wind or wonderlust, Now they have become a symbol of climate change spreading north further and further every year.

Lovely evening light in Orkney. When the light comes out to play here it is very magical! It's a defo must location for any landscape photographer... and I can't wait to go back one day... but it does make you work for your shots... which I like!

Colourful summer sunrise on the Stellisee lake. Remarkable reflection of Matterhorn peak on the water surface.

Taken on my first night in Orkney. I took a short walk along the Yesnaby coast with the kids. It was a lovely soft glowing sunset and very calm... and then those conditions where not repeated for the rest of the holiday LOL! When we got back to the car I managed one shot... but after a long days traveling we where all ready for our beds... so just went for the one composition that day.

Taken back in the summer on Orkney one evening. There was a storm on the horizon and by the time I got back to the car it wasn't so much on the horizon as right above me and I got soaked. But Im glad I stayed out pushing the envelope and knowing I was rewarded with the shot.

View of St. Mark's Campanile and St. Mark's Square as seen from the bell tower at Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, Italy.

This was prob one of my fave locations on Orkney and I managed back twice during our visit. Right on the top West of the Island with the North Atlantic to the West you can imagine the seas this place gets. Unfortunately whist I was there I never experienced anything to dramatic, but I can imagine it would be fantastic to shoot in those heavy sea conditions. The bay offers many views but I did like this one from the south a lot. Took a few compositions using the rocks in the foreground that evening, waiting for the moments of sunlight to add that certain wow factor that good light does! I liked the effect of the ten stop also just to slow everything down and flatten the water.

Rue Cremieux is probably the most colourful street in Paris with pastel coloured houses and shutters.

The Ring of Brodgar is a Neolithic stone circle in Orkney. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. It is thought the site was built between 2500BC and 2000BC. The stone circle is 104m in diameter and the 3rd largest in Britain. It originally had 60 stones but now only 27 remain. The area is still being understood but is of significant importance and thought to have been possibly the heart of Neolithic Britain at one time.

This is a re edit of a shot I'd posted in the summer. Im thinking of entering it into a competition in the Scotts Magazine Photographer of the Year Competition in the Landscape Category. Do you think it's good enough... or is it too predictable... should I go for something else?

Been looking through the last of my remaining unprocessed images from Orkney tonight and identified the last few I think still worth processing and sharing. This one was taken just after the sunset on what had been a nice day but the clouds where moving in... and after that our last few days on the Islands where very wet!

Initially I didn't like this as I felt I had too much just flat grass in the foreground... but in PP I lightened up the foreground by a stop with a graduated layer and it really just brought up enough detail that transformed the shot.

I simply spotted this composition whilst driving along the road... I liked the evening glow on the fields and the Kitchener monument on the far hill just added a little interest... along with that wonderful sunset sky. Really just a simple shot... with a 3 stop ND grad filter.

Taken at the Bay of Skaill in Orkney just as the blue hour started I thought this simple composition would work quite well with a LE and the light reflecting on the water. A 10 stop ND and 3 stop Hard Grad used.

Sorry could not resist the joke in the title... or indeed passing this field with the wee highland cow calf's without taking a picture... They are so unlike any other form of cow I know off... the rest seem a bit boring in comparison photography wise! Anyway a simple enough wee snap... but loved it all the same... especially the bit grass still attached to his mouth as he looked up inquisitively.

Id gone looking for a local field often left fallow where the poppies grow where you get nice vantage point looking over Midlothian and Newtongrange. The field was in crop this year however hence no poppies... but I still think with good light the field made a nice landscape subject!

Just dropped in a 3 stop Grad... shielded the lens as much as I could and hoped to avoid heavy flare. Many of the shots had it but I landed a few with minimal that I managed to remove in PP.

I prob got my one great sunset on our 2nd night on Orkney and to be honest I left this shoot thinking I was going to get many more and the weather and sun never quite lived up to those wonderful expectations this sunset filled me with. Id watched a vlog before I left that said the light was something special... despite all the bad weather this shot proves this... and I can't wait to go back one day and hopefully the balance will be firmly tipped in the favour of good light!

This was an HDR stack due to the high dynamic range. Im not a huge fan of the HDR effect if overdone... but a simple stack of 3 shots with three diff exposures for the sky, sea and foreground rocks combined gives a nice look.

Or a puffin to the rest of us not on Orkney! For some reason all the locals call birds by different names... the Puffin being the Tammie Norrie .... which in a way suits these little birds very well.

We spent a day over on the Isle of Westray which has a large Puffin colony. Going early August I thought we probably would have missed them all... but for whatever reason there was a few still holding out before heading off for the long winter at Sea. They where quite far off but managed this nice shot with the long lens. I say long winter... but in actual fact they probably much prefer it out there on reflection... hence why they go in the first place... they are sea birds after all and when you watch them on land... well they are a bit clumsy looking!

At any one time on the Bass Rock through the summer there are literally thousands of Gannets in flight above your head and all around the rock. The rock is home to over 150,000 pairs of birds. With that many birds I wondered when I was taking these in flight shots about how many if any have mid air collisions!? There is after all not Gannet Air Traffic Control!

I hope you are all well and had a busy weekend. We have been creating plans about the house which will give better use of space as the kids get older but it means a complete swap about of purpose for 4 rooms in the house. One of the kids moving into the playroom as his bedroom, the other moving out his wee room and into the older ones room. The wee bedroom turns into an office for mum and dad, and where we did have the office in the garden room we turn that into a gym and exercise space for us all. Will take about 3 months I think to do all this and sort the Garden... but we aint going on any forgiven holidays this year so we might as well make good use of the time and money. Lots of DIY for me!

Oh and my Canon R6 finally arrives tomorrow... Im a bit excited!

I thought I'd jump back to something more recent with todays picture! Well not that recent but taken back in the summer with a digital camera at least. This was one of the nicest sunrise mornings I got in Orkney.... however the location I was in did not overly lend itself to sunrises and I prob should have gone to the ring of Brodgar... however I was there and the sun was rising which was rare to see this summer whilst I was on Orkney as I got a lot of overcast glum days... so you make the best of it!

This was a real hard location to get a composition where the broch stood out from the background. Another few steps to the right led to the encroachment of a horrid wee brick tickets/ shop building.

The Broch of Gurness dates back to the Iron Age which housed a substantial community between 500 to 200BC. It would have originally been about 10m high. The tower itself was inhabited by the principal family of the settlement, however in times of attack the surrounding village would also be welcomed in for protection.
