Marlene Dietrich: “I am at heart a gentleman.”

Marlene Dietrich was a German-American actress and singer.Dietrich, a staunch anti-Nazi who despised antisemitism, became an American citizen in 1939.

In December 1941, the U.S. entered World War II, and Dietrich became one of the first celebrities to raise war bonds. She toured the US from January 1942 to September 1943 (appearing before 250 000 troops on the Pacific Coast leg of her tour alone) and it is said that she sold more war bonds than any other star. During two extended tours for the USO in 1944 and 1945, she performed for Allied troops on the front lines in Algeria, Italy, England and France and went into Germany with Generals James M. Gavin and George S. Patton. When asked why she had done this, in spite of the obvious danger of being within a few kilometres of German lines, she replied, "aus Anstand" — "it was the decent thing to do." Dietrich was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the US in 1945.

Mia Farrow: “With knowledge comes responsibility”

Mia Farrow has been a high profile advocate for children's rights, working to raise funds and awareness for children in conflict affected regions, predominantly in Africa. She is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has worked extensively to draw attention to the fight to eradicate polio, which she survived as a child.

Since 2007, Farrow has been involved with the Dream for Darfur campaign, which has made a major effort to focus public attention on China's support for the government of Sudan, with a special focus on the 2008 Summer Olympics. To raise awareness about situation in Sudan, Farrow began a water-only fast on April 27, 2009. On May 8, after 12 days of fasting, she called a halt to the fast due to a downturn in her health.

Farrow received the France Legion of Arts and Lettres award, the Refugees International McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award for "extraordinary service to refugees and displaced people", the Tiannamen Square Award, and the Leon Sullivan International Service award.

Aung San Suu Kyi: “We are convinced that the non-violent approach is the best for our country. We believe that it the long run it actually pays off. “

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese opposition politician and was General Secretary of the National League for Democracy. In the 1990 general election, Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party won a landslide victory, gaining 59% of the vote and 394 of 492 seats. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections, and she has remained under house arrest in Myanmar for almost 14 out of the past 20 years. She continues to be imprisoned. Influenced by both Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and by more specifically Buddhist concepts, Aung San Suu Kyi entered politics to work for democratization. She was offered freedom if she left the country, but she refused. Many nations and figures have continued to call for her release and that of 2,100 other political prisoners in the country.

Aung San Suu Kyi was the recipient of the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the Government of India.
