Koa was part of a zoo wolf pack of three, but aggression developed between the two females, so, they had to be separated. She is still adjusting to sanctuary life.
Saw this magnificent grey wolf residing at the time I took this photo at the Alaskan Wildlife Conversation Center, in Alaska obvs. It's the closest I've been to a wolf in the wild and even from a distance they looked proud and intelligent and amazing.

I don't want to alarm you, but some people close to me say that once a month, on the full moon, I look a bit like this. (That's the Halloween scary bit for those in parts of the world that celebrate it ;)

I have seen lots of wolves running across roads and have even photographed wolf pups but never have I had the chance to photograph an adult wolf at close range. This wolf was cautiously staying close to the woods as it was checking me out! This was definitely a lifer! Photo taken in southern Manitoba!

The Arctic wolf, Canis lupus arctos, also known as the white wolf or polar wolf, is a subspecies of grey wolf native to Canada's Queen Elizabeth Islands, from Melville Island to Ellesmere Island.
Arctic wolves inhabit the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. Thanks to its isolation, the Arctic wolf is not threatened by hunting and habitat destruction in the same way as its southern relatives. But it does face threats. In 1997 there was a decline in the Arctic wolf population and its prey, muskoxen, and Arctic hares.

Gray wolves are social animals, living together in tightly organized packs. Though known as gray wolves, fur color can range from white to shades of gray, brown and black. The gray wolf is federally designated as threatened in Minnesota and endangered in the remaining lower 48 states and Mexico.

Zwischen Männchen und Weibchen besteht ein Geschlechtsdimorphismus: Rüden sind meistens größer und schwerer als Fähen. Das Fell Eurasischer Wölfe ist gelblichgrau, graubraun oder dunkelgrau gefärbt. Die Unterseite der Schnauze und die Kehle sind heller, die Rückseiten der Ohren erscheinen leicht rötlich. Die Rückenfärbung weist in den meisten Fällen einen dunklen bis schwarzen Sattelfleck auf. Ebenfalls dunkler gefärbt sind oftmals die Rutenspitze und die Vorderseite der Beine. Im Gegensatz zu wolfsähnlichen Haushunden sind Wölfe hochbeiniger und haben eine gerade Rückenlinie, während sie bei Hunden oft zur Rute hin abfällt. Die Rute des Wolfs ist buschig und gerade. Wölfe haben tendenziell kleinere Ohren, die zudem innen dicht behaart sind.

I've seen coyotes in our neighborhood before, but never a wolf! Luckily it was just a cub, and the mother seemed friendly :)
The best thing I can say about Meow Wolf is that it is an immersive experience with a storyline...an art gallery constructed around a missing family with worlds inside worlds. You think you are entering an old house preserved as it was when they disappeared but they you journey to other lands like this through refrigerators and washing machines. I had always wanted to go and wasn't disappointed:

Breeding occurs between February and April, only the alpha male and female will mate and she will give birth to the pups alone in her den. After the first month, they emerge from the den with her. It is the responsibility of all the wolves in the pack to help to raise the offspring. They will take turns caring for them while other members go out to hunt. Even with the entire pack caring for them, less than half of all pups survive the first year.
The pups in a wolf pack have a great deal of freedom and privileges. In fact, they are often able to do more and to benefit more than some of the adults within the pack that have a very low ranking.
When they are about two years old they are mature, and they may stay within their own pack and be given a place on the social ladder or they can also leave that pack and go to form one of their own. Males often leave while females choose to stay in the pack they were born into.

The sanctuary is for wolves rescued from the wild that could not be let loose due to injury or their inability to live without human assistance.
They are not caged and can run free within the many acres of the sanctuary.
