With the power split, the West Michigan crew goes about working the transload that will require about two hours of jockeying cars around in and out of the lead and back onto the main to make sure everything is spotted up correctly.

GLLX GP18 #921 "Miss Scarlett" and SW1200 #1512 are on their way back east from the CSX interchange with about a dozen hoppers in tow on the West Michigan RR. This was Miss Scarlett's first trip as a leader after being in storage for about 5 years.

After heavy rains rolled through the area the day before, the crew of the West Michigan are being a little cautious as they head to the CSX interchange and the conductor points out a possible issue to the engineer.
“And my radio. That’s all we need baby, don’t you know?” It’s so humid in Michigan currently that the moment the sun sets, the fog rolls in near instantaneously. West Michigan’s pair of Geeps, GLLXs #921 and #4428, pause between switching moves at Lineage Logistics in Hartford on a very sticky and unpleasant night. After spotting some reefers for unloading, the crew will head back east to the Paw Paw River Transload yard and call it a night.

The West Michigan’s nightly train waits for the last of 2 reefers to be unloaded at Lineage Logistics warehouse in Hartford. Powering the lengthy train this chilly evening are 1959-built GP18 #921 and 1960-built SW1200 #1512.

GLLX #1416 and #1512 pause between switching moves on the small bridge that takes the railroad over Hog Creek. The bridge recently received some rehab work and some shoring up. The West Michigan RR isn't the most scenic, but there are some nice shots if one knows where to look.

We made a rare trip to the current far east end of the West Michigan the other night to pluck a dozen cars out of storage for delivery to CSX. Our trusty pair of Geeps, 921 and 4428, provide the power.

On the first day of official revenue operations, the West Michigan crew spots a Railbox at the dock at Hanson's Logistics in Hartford. This would end up being the first and only boxcar that Hanson's would ever receive after Pioneer sold the WMI to its current owners. Former Michigan Air Line (ex Coe Rail, originally GTW) SW1200 GLLX #1512 was the sole power on the new railroad at the time. Pioneer's long-dead NW2 #100 sits at the end of the track, and would be shipped out to Pioneer's shop in Illinois the following February.
GLLX GP18 #921 and SW1200 #1512 pause between switching moves at Lineage Logistics in Hartford. #921 was built in 1959 for the Norfolk & Western and was one of the very first production GP18s.

With Y106 laid in for the day, CSX got creative. L301 normally works west from GR on the Grand Rapids Sub as far as Sawyer, but on this day they had them do some of Y106's work east of GR on the Plymouth Sub at Fox. With that work complete, the local is seen here rounding the corner at Seymour for a meet with L303 in the double track. 301 would subsequently run right through Wyoming Yard on the main and head for the WMI interchange in Hartford.
GLLX GP18 #921 "Miss Scarlet" and MP15AC #1397 leave some cars on the CSX interchange in Hartford. #921 was recently brought back to life after a nearly 5 year slumber.

GLLX 1416 gets a drink while helping to load some rubber hoppers in Hartford. Once the cars were loaded and the tank was topped off, we dragged everything east to clear up for Progress Rail who was delivering us some rail we purchased from CSX. Busy times on the West Michigan!

GLLX GP18 #921 and SW1200 #1512 idle together for the first time in Hartford on the West Michigan. Shortly they would back on to the cut of loaded hoppers behind them and the crew would test out the pair of old EMDs to make sure they played nice together. With the MP15s moving up to the new Hamilton Northwestern RR, 921 and 1512 will be the assigned units on the WMI going forward.

AMC Aviation's smart G280 lining up for departure to Warsaw/Modlin (WMI/EPMO) as AMQ2W. The aircraft still wears the livery it had when operated by SW Business Aviation as 4K-AZ208 and still carries its former operator's logo by the cabin door.
All three of West Michigan’s operable units are on deck tonight as the crew prepares to move over 70 storage cars from the end of the line in order to dig a few out that are going back into service.
A first for me last night was getting to run a pair of honest-to-goodness high hood Geeps, “back to back” as designer Dick Dilworth intended. GLLX GP9 4428 and GP18 921 make a really nice (if unorthodox) pair. 4428 recently received a new generator and runs like a Swiss Watch. 24 air keeps the engineer busy, too!

Trackman goes about switch the tranload facility in Hartford before finishing up their day, a well placed Komatsu that is used to straddle the cars and unload them provided some nice elevation of them switching.
Our current motive power on the West Michigan Railroad is a pair of ex Union Pacific MP15ACs, GLLX 1397 and 1416. Both units were originally built for the Milwaukee Road. While it would be nice to paint them, there have been more important issues to address in the meantime. Hopefully this summer we will spruce them up a bit. Both engines are shown here after we tied up for the day.

West Michigan Railroad is a recent (2018) startup operating part of the old C&O branch that ran from Hartford to Paw Paw. Only three miles or so remain, but WMI serves at least three customers on their short railroad. Probably the most bucolic setting is this farm on the east end. The GP18 shown is former N&W, by way of the Twin Branch Coal Co.
