Before Convict Lake was a Resort, It Was an Escape Route
In 1929 the resort was officially established as Convict Lake Camp and owned by Bill Garner. Prior to that the resort area was referred to as Raymer's Camp. Ownership was passed to the Wenger Family in 1962 and to the current owners 1982. Click here to see an old brochure from the Convict Lake Camp days.
Convict Lake and Creek are so named as the result of an AMBUSH encounter here September 17, 1871, where a group of inmates escaped from prison in Carson City. Sheriff George Hightower eventually caught up with the convicts and a shoot out took place. Robert Morrison a Benton Merchant, Mono Jim and other posse members encountered the convicts on the present Convict Creek, then known as Monte Diablo Creek. In the encounter Morrison and Mono Jim were killed and the convicts escaped to be captured later in Round Valley. The towering peak above the lake was re-named Mt. Morrison and the smaller one below it Mono Jim.
The Indians are said to have called Convict Lake Wit-sa-nap bearing this legend. "The streams which flowed from the mountains were supposed to be filled with Pot-sa-wa-gees, water babies, who lived in spirit, but were visible to the eye, having the face of an Indian child and the body of a fish. Hi-na-nu was a wise and good man, whose spirit the Indians reverenced, and to whom they looked for guidance in earthly matters. However, he was endeavoring to capture the Pot-sa-wa-gees as they traveled up stream. When the sources of the streams were reached the water became so shallow that the water babies were in great danger of being taken by their pursuer. They prayed to the Great Spirit for aid, and in answer he caused the waters to flow up hill and to join the waters flowing down from the mountains, uniting in one large, deep lake, wherein the little spirits found safety ---Wit-sa-nap, the Convict Lake of to-day." * Wit privilege – (een leenvertaling van het Engelse white privilege) is de verzamelterm voor de privileges (maatschappelijke voordelen) waarover mensen met een witte huidskleur zouden beschikken vergeleken met leden van andere etnische groepen.
*Wit voetje ('Hij heeft een wit voetje bij hem') – hij heeft bij een bepaalde persoon een streepje voor.
* Wit werken – in tegenstelling tot zwartwerken, wel belasting over het loon betalen.
* Witte werkster – een (mislukt) experiment van de Nederlandse overheid om de huishoudelijk hulp uit het zwarte circuit te halen.
* De witte vloot - worden ongewapende schepen van de Koninklijke marine mee bedoeld.
* Witte fietsenplan - een plan uit 1965 om in Amsterdam een fietsdeelsysteem te introduceren waarbij gratis witte fietsen in collectief eigendom in de stad geplaatst zouden worden.

* Maundy Thursday – the day before Good Friday; the day of the last supper of Jesus Christ with his 12 disciples.
* White goods – household electrical appliances that are white in color, such as refrigerators, ovens and the like. This is in contrast to brown goods (televisions, hi-fi systems, etc.). But white goods also include sheets, towels, etc. that go on sale during the white weeks.

* White Bicycle Plan - a 1965 plan to introduce a bicycle-sharing system in Amsterdam whereby free white bicycles would be placed in the city in collective ownership.
Het heide- en bosgebied Witte Veen ligt tussen Buurse en de Duitse grens. Vroeger was het een groot, wild hoogveengebied én een bekende smokkelroute tussen Nederland en Duitsland. Later werd het afgegraven ten behoeve van de landbouw. Tegenwoordig herstellen Natuurmonumenten en Duitse natuurbeheerders het natuurlijk karakter van het hoogveen.prachtig natuurgebied met ruige graslanden, poelen, heide, bos en hoogveen. In het gebied kun je boomkikkers aantreffen. Op de velden groeien klokjesgentiaan, veenpluis, eenarig wollegras en lavendelheide.

Aan de staart van de leeuw kun je zijn humeur aflezen, als de staart hard heen en weer zwiept, moet je maken dat je weg komt hij is namelijk dan boos. Maar als de staart zachtjes, met een kalm, rustig gangetje heen en weer gaat is hij tevreden.
Leeuwen hebben goede ogen. Dat komt omdat de ogen van een leeuw wat meer uit elkaar staan, hierdoor kunnen ze goed inschatten hoe ver iets is. Ook zijn de ogen geschikt om s ‘nachts en overdag goed te kunnen zien, er is een verschil s ‘nachts zien ze alleen zwart wit, maar overdag hebben ze kleuren(beeld). De ogen zijn groot tegenover de grote van zijn kop. De pupillen van een leeuw staan normaal wijd open, maar als de leeuw bang is worden de pupillen spleetjes net zoals je kat.
Door de stem te verhogen of te laten dalen of door harder of zachter te snorren kunnen leeuwen uiting geven aan vrees, opwinding en gevaar. De oorschelpen spelen ook een belangrijke rol bij de communicatie. Als het dier rustig is, liggen de oren gewoon plat en worden iets achterwaarts gehouden. Als de oren worden opgezet (recht omhoog) en, met de binnenkant naar voren, strak worden gehouden, is het dier op zijn hoede.

We Native people have really been tested. This testing is having our land taken from us, our culture challenged, and our way of living altered. Gratefully, we have not lost our spirituality. our spirituality has been the key for our people making it through all of these tests. Our prayers are strong. Indian people have also been able to adjust to change and still keep their culture and spirituality. Today, we should be grateful to the Creator for the present, and for the lessons of the past. May our future be guided by the Great Spirit. Great Spirit, thank You for Mother Earth and Father Sky. Thank You for my life.
