Chestnut Mountain Lodge is a beautiful resort nestled in the hills outside of Galena, Illinois. I visited in December when the snow and ice created a beautiful winter scenic view.

On the bank of the River Usk, somewhere in Newport (Casnewydd), Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Friday 29th January 2018.

NOTICE: I have a policy where I never geotag my photos if the shots were taken at or very near the models’ homes, for their safety and privacy.

About this photograph.

This is Lulu, a Welsh model living in Newport, whom I got in contract with through a modelling website, and arranged for a two hours outdoor photo-shoot.

At that time, I was a single parent. I arranged for the ex-wife to pick up the kids from school, and have them for the weekend. So on that day, after I dropped the kids off at school, I grabbed my photographic kit, got in my car, and drove off to Newport.

I met her and her husband at their home in Newport. After a cup of tea, breaking the ice, and stuff like that, we went into Newport city centre for the first stage of the outdoor photo-shoot.

When that was done, we returned back to their street, and the second stage of the outdoor photo-shoot was done near their home.

Here, Lulu is posing in her yellow t-shirt and dark blue jeans tucked into her knee-length boots, she is also wearing a light colour belt and a pearl necklace.

She is also wearing a Size 22 brown coloured M&Co faux fur coat with hood pulled up over her head.

Lulu is posing by leaning on the rails, and looking as if she’s deep in thoughts, thinking about something.

In the background is the Newport Transporter Bridge.

About M&Co.

In 1834, Neil McGeoch started a pawnbroker business, in Paisley, Scotland, and over the many years, the family business expanded to 6 pawnbroker shops.

By 1953, the brothers Len and Iain McGeoch decided to convert the pawnbroker shops into clothing stores, and traded as Mackays Stores Limited. Over the years, they acquired a few other clothing retail business and expanded to approximately at least 140 by 1986, up to 270 by 2005.

In 2005, the company was rebranded as M&Co for a more modern image, and went on to operate over 300 stores, including few overseas and an online store.

The company first specialised in women’s clothes, later expanded to include men’s and children’s clothes.

Sadly due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the early 2020s, the company struggled with business as customers stayed at home, and struggled to keep going.

The company finally went into administration, and it was reported that the branding was bought by the McGeoch family. By spring of 2023, M&Co was closing down.

Car park at St Julian Inn, Newport, Wales, United Kingdom.

Maes parcio yn St Julian Inn, Casnewydd, Cymru.

Morning of Wednesday 8th February 2023.

Bore dydd Mercher 8 Chwefror 2023.

About the photographs.

Am y ffotograffau.

This is Olivia, a model I booked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot, outside of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd).

Olivia is wearing a winter outfit containing of a Size L cream coloured faux fur jacket with hood, from New Look. She is also wearing a light blue turtleneck jumper, trousers with shiny strips down the length, and white trainers.

In those photographs, she is seen posing with my Minolta X-700 manual focus 35mm film SLR camera, which I have since 1985, but sadly stopped working, so I kept it purely for sentimental value and as props.

She is posing as if she’s checking the camera setting and looking to take some shots. Those photographs are as stand alone photos and also as part of a graphic design asset.

The vehicle behind her is a 2005 Land Rover Freelander.

It is a diesel 2.0L Td4 SE model with manual gearbox, and a BMW M47 engine. The tyres are BF Goodrich T/A KO2 All Terrain tyres on steel wheels. The Freelander was an entry-level Land Rover from 1997 to 2006, before being replaced by the Freelander 2 until 2015.

The location is the car park next to St Julian Inn, on the south bank of the River Usk.

With special thanks to the manager/owner of St Julian Inn for giving me permissions to use the car park.

As Olivia was booked for two-hours, we stayed at this location only for 50 minutes before moving to another location. Nothing wrong there, just that I needed a change of background. Those will be uploaded to my Photostream in near future.

What is this all about?

This is the first in a series of a long-term project I started working on, which is called Project: Freelander Ladies. It is a variation of the so called Land Rover Girls type of photographs. Generally, the majority of the Land Rover Girls kind of photos tend to be of younger women posing next to mostly either the Series or the Defender production models, and less common are the Discovery or Range Rover models. There are barely enough photos of women posing next to a Freelander, so my aim is to create some, specially for the Freelander owners and fans to enjoy.

In addition to this being a “cars and girls” kind of photography which is the main role, there are other roles, including photographs needed for a graphic design project. In this case, I needed Olivia to pose as if she is either a journalist or private detective taking photos, for the purpose of designing a book cover or a DVD case cover. I will showcase those photos in near future.

Trivia: I directed Olivia on posing as a character taking photos of suspicious activity, by saying to her something like “Imagine in your mind, you’re a detective taking photos of someone to be used as evidence.” So Olivia posed in ways that I considered to be what I’m looking for, the right kind of photos I needed (i.e.: for back cover of a DVD case design).

But there was this one time that she posed by looking at the back of the camera, pretending to be checking photos on an LCD screen. I had to stop shooting, and explained that this part is a bad idea. I explained that anyone familiar with cameras may recognise it as a manual focus film camera, which does not have a monitor on the back for checking photos. In novels or movies, this would be what is called a “plot hole” or “anachronism.” I suggest that if she wants to pose as if checking the camera, she could pretend to be checking the control settings on top of the camera.

About the subject.

Am y pwnc.

Astraka of London was a faux fur manufacturer. It first started as Alfred Morris Furs in 1898 in London, before moving to Buckinghamshire in the 1940s.

By about the 1960s, the company employed about 400 people, and produced faux fur coats, selling to top shops like Selfridges and exporting all over the world.

But by about 1988, it went into receivership and closed down.

There are very limited details about the company on the Internet, specially as the company closed down before home Internet and the World Wide Web became more popular.

In my back garden, somewhere in Worcestershire, United Kingdom, on Tuesday 15th November 2016.

About the photograph.

This is Marie, known as LadyArtist on the model booking websites like PurplePort, where I found her from. I booked her for a two hours photo-shoot at my home.

She is posing in a cream coloured [UK] size 16 Dorothy Perkins faux fur coat. She is also posing in her own dark blouse and dark blue jeans tucked into her black knee-length boots. Here, she is posing next to the back wall of my house.

The first hour was an outdoors fashion themed photo-shoot, and during this time, she worn different fur coat outfits and styles, posed in different spots with different backgrounds. This phase of the photo-shoot was mainly fashion based, and also serve as assets for my graphic design projects.

The second hour was indoors, for glamour and kinky themed shoots.

You can see the other shoots in my Album titled LadyArtist.

As I am a deaf person with speech impaired, you would figure there would be communications difficulties between myself the photographer and her as the model. But despite the difficulties, we did get on well. She had left a positive review on my account on PurplePort.

Sadly she passed away about two years after this photo-shoot, and I was not aware of this, until about two years after her passing away, when I saw a memorial message on her profile on the model booking website.

She was a really great model, I had a great time working with her.

About the subject.

In 1909 Dorothy Perkins was founded in Leeds, in the United Kingdom, under the name of H. P. Newman & Co.

In 1916, they started using the Dorothy Perkins trading name, and by 1919, they opened their first Dorothy Perkins specialist shop for ladieswear, and over the years, they expanded to about 75 shops by 1939.

In the late 1970s, they expanded to about 275 shops, and a 70% shares in the boutique company Bibi. However, by 1979, Dorothy Perkins was sold to The Burton Group later known as the Arcadia Group.

But the Arcadia Group, owned by the wife of Philip Green, entered into administration in the early 2020s, with most of the brand names either closed down or sold off.

The online company Boohoo bought the Dorothy Perkins brand name, and it is now trading as an online store only.

In my back garden, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom. Taken in the morning of Friday 15th November 2016.

Note: My camera was incorrectly set to the wrong year, the EXIF recorded the year as 2015, but it is really 2016.

About this photograph.

This is Marie, whom was known as LadyArtist on the model booking websites.

Marie was booked for a two hours photo-shoot project at my home. The first hour was to be standard modelling as part of a graphic design project, and the second hour was to be glamour kind of modelling.

The first hour was split into two parts. The first part was to be a general winter style fashion wear, modelling in fur coats, wearing a scarf, with jeans tucked into knee-length boots. Those can be found in my Photostream and Albums. Most of the shoots were to be used in various graphic design projects, such as magazines, catalogues, adverts, etc.

Now about the second part…

I explained to her that for this task, I needed a fictional female singer/songwriter posing for a fictional CD album art cover as part of my graphic design project. The character she pretends to be, would be a singer/songwriter, is a guitarist, and plays rock / alternative rock / soul or thereabouts. Say for example, the likes of Sharleen Spiteri, Sheryl Crow, etc.

It is not just only for a CD album art cover, but also for anything else related to the album, like tour poster, advert, magazine interview, etc, in additional to the mock-up CD case.

I asked her to pose in this black fur jacket, while keeping the rest of her outfit as she worn, carry my acoustic guitar, and stand beside the back wall of the outbuilding. The reason for this location, the need for this kind of background, is because I may want to create the album’s title on it in the form of a writing on the wall.

I may be deaf with speech impaired, so communications can sometimes be difficult, but as a very good and experienced model herself, she was able to understand my project, my plan, and my instructions, and carried out her task very well. I got the kind of shots I planned for and hoped for.

After that, bearing in mind that I was a busy full-time single parent, I did manage to get some graphic design artwork done while the kids were at school. But that task was done using CorelDRAW software on my old 32-bit Windows XP computer, and I later upgraded to a new computer with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional Edition, so sadly the old CorelDRAW software was incompatible with the new computer. As a result of this, I took the opportunity to switch to Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.,) but I have not yet had a chance to try to convert the old Corel files into the new Adobe format. I also consider on redoing the project, by improving it.

So, this is the story of the photo-shoot.

About LadyArtist.

Marie was a model (either professional or amateur, I forgotten which), and adverted on a few of the model booking websites like PurplePort and similar, under her handle of LadyArtist. But at least two years after this photo-shoot I did, she had passed away of cancer or something. I only found out two years after her death (four years after the photo-shoot), when I saw her online account was turned into some kind of a memorial by her husband. I believe by now, most of her accounts have been deactivated.

About my project.

In 1987-89, I studied traditional graphic design at college, while working for a professional photographer as a darkroom technician and photographer’s assistant. After leaving college, it was difficult to get a job because of discrimination, due to my being a deaf person. Because the college did not have much computers, the graphic design I did was the old fashion way, pencils, pens, masking tapes, prints, glue, etc., so while unemployment and seeking a job, I did self-study in digital graphic design.

For me, photography is not a hobby. I do enjoy doing photography, but not as a hobby, I would prefer it should be as a career. I considered photography as my first choice, while graphic design as my secondary choice. When I became single parent, I put it all on hold to look after the kids.

At first, when the kids were old enough, I attempted to do some graphic design for myself, mostly to keep my skills going, and to keep a portfolio full of fresh ideas to show to employers during interviews. Or if needed, I would consider going freelance for myself.

Most of my graphic design projects are generally more of publicity and media, like posters, book covers, DVD covers, etc., Often I would design CD album art covers, and this photo-shoot is part of the project. Usually I prefer to try to use my own photographs rather than rely on stock images.

A quiet moment in the heart of Frankfurt — soft winter light, clean architecture, and Lucia bringing pure elegance to the frame.

What I love most about this shot is the balance between strength and softness: the confident posture, the calm expression, the subtle movement of the coat.

Taken during a spontaneous cold-weather session that turned into something truly special.

Frankfurt, Germany • Tower 185 area

It was a pretty chilly evening to shoot on the solstice. Upper 30's, slight breeze, and waterfront. The models were freezing in midriff athleisure wear earlier, and even more-so once the skirts went on. Was tough to see them shivering but the coats were always just out of the frame to be put on after every 3 or 4 frames.

This is one of my faves from the day. I love the AD600!

Olivia is wearing a winter style outfit containing of a Size L cream coloured faux fur jacket with hood from New Look. She is also wearing a light blue turtleneck jumper, trousers with shiny strips down the length, and white trainers.

Here, she is posing in front of a 2005 Land Rover Freelander.

The Old Station, Tintern. Near the village of Tintern (Tyndym), in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Tuesday 2nd of February 2016.

About the photograph and the photo-shoot.

This is Sally, a model living in Wales, whom I booked for a couple of hours outdoor photo-shoot. I got in touch with Sally through one of the online modelling website, I can’t remember which ones, but could have been PurplePort or another website. After the pre-shoot communications, we arranged to meet up at The Old Station, Tintern.

She arrived with her husband and their little girl, and they were the first to arrive, then enjoyed a little bit of a day out in the grounds while they waited for me to arrive on time. When I parked my car, got out, and was looking for her, and she spotted me, so she waved me over.

The photo-shoot was split into two sections, one hour each. The first section was mainly fashion like photo-shoot, right next to the old railway carriages, those are the photos from the first section.

Here, she is wearing a casual style winter outfit, which is of a tan coloured faux fur jacket bought from a charity shop, along with her own sweater, her own blue jeans, and her flat heeled boots.

I asked her for flat heeled footwear because most women are not likely to wear high heels in such places like this, especially with uneven ground, and that she’s supposed to be dressed in a more casual style. Also, I asked for her to tuck her jeans into her boots for this kind of fashion style.

Here, she is posing next to an old and refurbished railway carriage which is a static display on what is left of the railway tracks, outside the old railway station. For more details about the railway station, feel free to read the article under the heading of About the location below.

Most of the starting shots were of her standing on the ground, in front of the carriage, before moving onto the platform, where she pose right next to the carriage with her feet on the carriage’s buffer.

The photos of her standing in front of the carriage were taken with the lens at various lengths and my position also at various distance from her, hence different background sizes, and different looks.

After those shots, she changed to a different fur jacket, and posed next to a different carriage. You can find them in the album titled Sally.

About the location.

The Old Station or Tintern railway station, is a former railway station on the Wye Valley Railway line that ran approximately 15 miles between the towns of Monmouth to the north and Chepstow in the south.

The station opened in November 1878 and was one of the four stations along the line, and the railway company chose to build a large station as they were hoping to generate more income from tourist visiting the nearby Tintern Abbey.

The Wye Valley Railway line was a railway line along the lower Wye Valley and often crossed over between Wales and England due to the River Wye being used as the border between the two countries.

The railway line was in use between 1876 to 1964, and was operated by Great Western Railway (GWR) until taken over by British Rail (BR). Once BR took over the railway line, they reviewed its viability and stopped passenger services in 1959, while allowing goods transportation to continue until the line closed in 1964.

The rail station was bought by the local country council, refurbished it into a café and exhibition, then opened to the public. Monmouthshire County Council later bought a couple of old carriages, which were refurbished as gift shop, tourism information, and an exhibition. The two carriages are displayed on what’s left of the rail tracks.
