"I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter’s dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires."
By Thomas Hardy
Winter Wharfe - A bitterly cold winter morning on the River Wharfe, with first light hitting the ruins of the Augustinian Priory at Bolton Abbey, reflected in the flow of the river.

Broken snow shoes, and spending the night in one of the fiercest coldest storms on the rim are part of the story. My only regret here is that I had to leave when I did, mostly catalyzed by a broken window in the jeep, but also due to the frigid temperatures of starting the diesel at 10 degrees Fahrenheit without being able to plug it in somewhere. There's nothing quite like photography in clearing, or oncoming storm conditions. In this case it was oncoming, and soon there was a blanket of fog pouring up the side of the caldera creating my first brocken spectre. Really just a magical whisper of what is hopefully to come this winter.

It's been a wild weather week so far. Rain, snow, hail, and gusty winds. After several consecutive years of draught, I've forgotten just what inclement weather is like. Looks like winter has arrived.

I love winter after a fresh snow fall. The world becomes so quiet as the new snow absorbs all sound. A setting sun seen through the trees doesn't hurt either.
A random shot taken in the woods after our first 2024 snowstorm. It's not exactly an exhilarating photo, but I really like how the trees look with snow plastered on one side from the wind during the storm.

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow is glistening

Walking in a winter wonderland...♩ ♪ ♫
Inspired by this song (it's mainly cold here..;D)
Derwentwater lies icy cold and still beneath the snow clad fells of the Western Lake District.
I had been up on this ridge the previous winter, but this year it was like an alpine walk with deep crisp snow crunching underneath my spikes. I thought it would make a great vantage point and lunch spot for John Bleakley, who had not had the pleasure of the views along Walla Crag before.
So we ploughed along the snowy ridge line, surprised to see we had quite a few fellow walkers on the summit of Lady's Rake, where I took this pano, before moving on to have a spot of lunch all alone on top of Falcon Crag.
In the Winter,
the trees stand bare,

Winter returned today and dropped about 2" of snow. I think it made everything look so pretty"
Winter grips Minneapolis coating the landscape with snow. The daily CN transfer trots over the Soo Line bridge on its way to the Northtown transfer yard. I love the snow, love the bridge, and and pleased to grab this shot with the only CN presence in the area.
An einem strahlenden Wintertag habe ich diese Beeren aufgenommen. Der Raureif war gerade in der Sonne geschmolzen.
On a bright winter day I photographed these berries. The frost had just melted in the sun.
