Fell Racers in South Lakeland set off for Farleton Knott, Cumbria, in a BOFRA (British Open Fell Runners Association) Championship series race (#10 of 16).

Number 1 (Simon Bailey, in front already here) won this race in 18:46 and was BOFRA Champion in 2022.

This is the sport of running and racing off-road over upland country where the steep gradient and rough terrain are significant components of the challenge. The name arises from the origins of the English sport in the fells of northern Britain, especially those in the Lake District. It has elements of trail running, cross country and mountain running.

This lemur was trying to prove that he could out-stare anybody and he was very convincing.

“Listen…” His words trailed off with a sigh. When he did that I knew what was coming next.

He gestured to the side and spoke again, “I know you’re the Princess and all, but you can’t have me locking up every person who looks at you the wrong way.”

I stopped and gave him one of my winning smiles, I even added a brief batting of my eyes for extra measure. “You like it.” I gave him a light tap to his chest and started walking again.

I knew he rolled his eyes at me, I could feel it. A moment later he followed after, re-taking up his position as my guard. He has had his position for over two-years now and not once had he hesitated to take care of anyone who came at me with ill-intentions. Sometimes I liked to think it was simply because he was good at his job, but other times I wondered if it was something else . . .

“They tried to stop her, but they failed miserably. They overlooked her, tried to discourage her, and sabotage her, but she persevered through it all with her head held high. They talked behind her back and plotted against her, but they didn’t realize that they were messing with an unstoppable, resilient Black Queen. She’s ambitious, intelligent, self-confident, and bold. She’s a Phenomenal Black Queen that didn’t have to compromise her integrity to get ahead. She’s genuinely happy, successful, and free to be herself. She can, she does, she wins!”

A rare Saturday working of 6S45 presented a rare winter opportunity to see this working in daylight hours, and fortunately this coincided with an agreeably sunny day. A little after 9am 66744 is seen approaching Winning Signal box only a mile or so into it's journey.

The substantial puddle is an indication of the quantity of rain that has fallen over the past few weeks.

The stretch of sand at Seilebost beach on the south side of Luskentyre Bay was once voted one of the top 10 best beaches in the world. Come here on a fine, sunny day and it won ‘t be difficult to see why. Whatever time of year you visit this is a perfect destination for spectacular photo shots or for those just looking to truly get away from it all.

Pure sands with rocky patches slope gently into the pristine, aquamarine waters of the sea. Fine views across the water to Taransay and Ben Luskentyre reward the visitor with that winning combination of clean sands, sparkling waters and mountain vistas.

One thing to note is that, whilst the view is iydllic, there is the possibility of quicksand in the area so walkers should avoid walking in the wet sand at low tide.

The beach can be accessed from the A859. Seilebost is on a promontory of land jutting out into the sea, north of the tiny village of the same name. Access to the beach from the road be a little difficult, but for those prepared to make the effort, the reward can be that you just might have this tiny bit of paradise all to yourself.

The Eastern end of the beach gives way to grassy dunes, a suitable starting point for long walks.

The traditional crofting village of nearby Seilebost (pronounced Shell-a-bost) has no facilities other than holiday cottages. There are no facilities near the beach, but restaurants and other amenities can be found in Tarbert.

During the Highland clearances, people living on the Western side of the Isle of Harris were forced to move east, so that cattle could be grazed in the more fertile West. Today Highland cattle and sheep still graze in the grassy slopes.

Drove down to the Historic Carl Sandberg Property on Saturday morning and walked around Side Lake. It was gently raining and the colors were amazing. The Carl Sandburg National Historic Site is located near Hendersonville in the village of Flat Rock, North Carolina, and was the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and writer Carl Sandburg. The 264-acre site includes the Sandburg residence, the goat farm, rolling pastures, mountainside woods, 5 miles of hiking trails and two small lakes.

THEME: "NEVER GIVE UP"

One of the strangest and most memorable things I've lived through is being in Paris when France won the World Cup. The streets were absolutely transformed and I have many photos of people rejoicing (some that I have posted previously).

But, I also tend to be drawn to that opposite feeling and the bipolar sense that happens in reality. Because, it's such a strong current of collective consciousness when that many people are rooting for something that you actually forget it's about sports at all and it feels more about the collective spirit of France or even of humanity.

I could tell that this girl wanted to be a part of that with the way she had decorated her face and with the French flag she was holding but I think she didn't quite know how and that's an interesting thing to capture...maybe even more intriguing for me than all the wild dancing and singing. We are all young and awkward once and some of us know very intrinsically (even when we're older) precisely how this girl felt.

I'm quite sure many award winning togs do this sort of thing, a wee tweek and a bit of added pazzazz. It makes a prettier picture and that's what we try to do isn't it? No matter what Loch Shiel looks pretty special a lot of the time. Best loch in Scotland! It's not always grey here.

No, not this photo, but if I had managed to get there for the sunrise, who knows, it could have been award winning. If you follow Lynne Berry (and if you don't, why not?) then you will know that I agreed to met her and her donkey at this location for sunrise. The coloured light that morning was spectacular. I know because I viewed it for the whole journey from Craster to Lindisfarne. I just got there too late. But still, always fun capturing these upturned boat sheds and that castle.

Arranged for the Macro Monday theme "Four" this might be a winning hand ... or not.
