Tim Linehan of Linehan Outfitting Co. in Troy, Montana, sent in these pictures from a fine day out chasing birds. Our grouse season in Vermont is just two days away, and I'm champing at the bit to get out in the woods.
Each Fall I trade in my drift Boat and Fly-Rods for my 12 Pointing Dogs and two Labs and head up to what many consider the Gray Partridge "mecca" of North America ...Saskatchewan .The seasons starts the same as the Dogs and I get in the groove of long walks across native grass intermixed with Agricultural fields of Wheat ,Canola , Peas and Lentils . High Protein foods for the Huns and Sharptails that flourish there .
Although the hunting is good we are dealing with High Temperatures and Long Days, everything seems deceivingly calm .Once October rolls around Mother Nature's pace picks up , the Upland Birds are actively feeding and more Waterfowl move into the area and start to Stage ,It seems everything is alive ,along with the weather the tempo of the hunt changes .Sunny days are great for hunting Upland Birds , while a cold snap with a bit of snow pushes more Waterfowl in from the north which spells the makings of a great Duck Shoot .Of course all this action would be incomplete without the Dogs.,after all they make it .
Los Ombues Lodge in Entre Rios Province, Argentina, is the first wingshooting lodge to receive Orvis’s International Lodge of the Year award. The award is based on customer feedback sent to Orvis and reflects their recent experiences at a sporting destination. Carlos Sanchez ,and his associates at Los Ombues, caters to Orvis customers who travel to hunt duck, dove, and perdiz on their 37,000 acre property bordering the Parana River. Those customers routinely rave about the high quality of the shooting, the guides and the accommodations. The lodge was designed from the ground up as a shooting lodge and isn’t an estancia adapted for shooting guests, which is the norm in Argentina. Los Ombues sports a fine appointed gun room, wine cellar, and air-conditioned rooms.
Last week, I returned with my wife, Els, to the old stamping grounds about an hour east of Great Falls and hunted with a good friend, Chad Boedecker, who guides with PRO Outfitters. We spent two days with great dogs in great country sharing great times.

When you make wingshooting gear, where do you hold your staff retreat? In the Maine woods during October, of course.

Here at Highland Hills Ranch, we are constantly recommending the Orvis Ultimate Upland Chaps to our guests. Our wingshooting guides can be found wearing them in the field daily. The waterproof feature makes them great when walking through the early morning dew and prevents wet pant legs for the rest of the day.
