When you make wingshooting gear, where do you hold your staff retreat? In the Maine woods during October, of course.
Each Fall I trade in my drift Boat and Fly-Rods for my 12 Pointing Dogs and two Labs and head up to what many consider the Gray Partridge "mecca" of North America ...Saskatchewan .The seasons starts the same as the Dogs and I get in the groove of long walks across native grass intermixed with Agricultural fields of Wheat ,Canola , Peas and Lentils . High Protein foods for the Huns and Sharptails that flourish there .
Although the hunting is good we are dealing with High Temperatures and Long Days, everything seems deceivingly calm .Once October rolls around Mother Nature's pace picks up , the Upland Birds are actively feeding and more Waterfowl move into the area and start to Stage ,It seems everything is alive ,along with the weather the tempo of the hunt changes .Sunny days are great for hunting Upland Birds , while a cold snap with a bit of snow pushes more Waterfowl in from the north which spells the makings of a great Duck Shoot .Of course all this action would be incomplete without the Dogs.,after all they make it .
One of the great things about having our offices located in the mountains of southwestern Vermont is that we have pretty much instant access to the outdoors. Last week, a few us of took a long lunch to chase grouse on a hillside behind my house. Orvis Rod & Tackle Manager Steve Hemkens brought his dog, Cayenne, and Eastern ELOG Coordinator Scott McEnaney brought Diesel and Ghillie. My friend Brew Moscarello, who owns Vewdoo balance boards, rounded out our party.
When researching the hunting lodges for Great Hunting Lodges of North America, Castle Valley Outdoors piqued my interest. Here, great wingshooting is accompanied by the staggering scenic beauty of southeastern Utah. Massive rock buttes and bluffs surround the valley, and while great wingshooting is reward enough, when coupled with these surroundings Castle Valley is an incomparable experience.
